A beginner’s guide to Fraser Island
If you’ve been told about the incredible beach locations in Australia, then chances are you’ve heard about Fraser Island. For those in search of white sandy beaches, this could be classed as somewhat of a mecca since it enjoys the accolade of being the world’s largest sand island. What better place for a stroll along the beach, feeling the soft grains of sand between your toes as you gaze across the glittering blue waters.
So, if you’re there for the first time, what do you visit? How long do you spend there? And where do you stay? Rather than trawl through the endless websites, blogs, and forums out there you can simply check out this beginner’s guide to Fraser Island (or add it to your list of websites, blogs, and forums, of course)!

Picking your perfect base

As you can imagine, hotels and guesthouses can be pricey but arguably the best way to immerse yourself in the Fraser Island experience is by camping. Sleeping side by side with nature, listening to the wonderful nighttime sounds is thoroughly recommended! There are several campsites on the island, each offering a variety of options for those bringing campervans and tents or those who want to indulge in a cabin. You will need to secure a camping permit before staying on the island so make sure you acquire this in advance.

How long do you stay?

This is entirely up to you. Many people choose to visit Fraser as part of a tour, spending only a day or two on the island, but independent travellers would normally stay for between two days and a week. If you are choosing to extend your stay, then you will likely need to hire a 4WD to get around. Before choosing this option, ensure that your vehicle is appropriate for the island and that you have a permit to drive there.

What to do on Fraser Island

Take a dip in the blue waters

If you are, at heart, a water baby, then Fraser Island will give you multiple chances to take a dip. Fraser Island is home to a unique type of lake called a ‘perched dune’ lake. These pools are formed within sand dunes whose bases have hardened, and their water levels are only maintained by rainwater. Half of the world’s perched lakes are found on the island and the most popular to visit are Lake Mackenzie, Wabby, Birrabeen, and Bowarrady.
Check out the wildlife

The diversity of Fraser Island’s natural habitat supports an incredible array of wildlife. With rainforests emerging from the sand dunes and the sea lapping at the shore, you can expect to spot an impressive variety of animals. Dingoes are the most famous resident here, but you can also be on the lookout for swamp wallabies and sugar gliders as well as 354 species of birds and 79 species of reptiles including the Sand Monitor and Lace Monitor. Additionally, as you gaze out to sea it’s not unlikely that you will see dolphins and turtles, or if you’re visiting from July to November, migrating humpback whales.

Other things to do on Fraser Island

A beginner’s guide to Fraser IslandDelve into some of the history of Fraser Island by visiting the Maheno Shipwreck that washed ashore in 1935. Lying 10km north of Happy Valley, this is the most famous wreck on the island, and it is a humbling experience to see its disintegrating remains. For those who prefer to explore on foot, the Fraser Island Great Walk, 75 mile beach, and rainforest trails will leave hikers spoiled for choice. Overall, visitors to the island will find that they are never lost for something to do, with the surroundings acting like a glorious natural playground.
If you would like to take it easy and let someone else guide you through the very best that Fraser Island has to offer, then check out some of the incredible tour options offered by Sightseeing Tours Australia.
