Italy may be a relatively small country geographically; however, it is absolutely full of unbelievable places to see and things to do while visiting.

How long do you need in Italy? If you wish to see all the main attractions Italy has to offer, we recommend that you allocate 10 days to exploring this truly magical country.

Iconic locations you cannot miss


1. Rome


The historical capital city of Italy, that dates back thousands of years is an obvious place to start your journey. The typical friendly, social, and accommodating culture of the Italian people shines through when you are in Rome. There are gorgeous café’s, restaurants, and ice creameries on every street, as well as beautiful architecture and some of the best shopping in the world! When in Rome, be sure to check out the world-famous Colosseum, the Pantheon, Trevi Fountain, and the Piazza Navona.

2. Vatican City


Technically its own country, however completely surrounded by Rome, The Vatican City is considered to be the most holy place on earth and is home to the Pope of Roman Catholicism. The Vatican City is a hub for art, culture, and history and when visiting you must check out St. Peter’s Basilica, The Vatican Museums, Sistine Chapel, and the Vatican City Gardens.

3. Leaning tower of Pisa


Like its name, the leaning tower of Pisa, is just that. Built in 1173, the tower has been an iconic tourist attraction for hundreds of years. Due to being built on an unstable foundation, the tower significantly leans 4 degrees to the right. Easily one of Italy’s biggest attractions, visitors generally stand in front of the tower and make it look like they are holding it up, this optical illusion is a fun and unique way to remember your trip to Pisa!

4. Pompeii


Pompeii is another well-known attraction in Italy that you most likely would have heard of. Pompeii is a small town that is situated at the base of the active volcano Mt. Vesuvius. In the year 79 A.D, Vesuvius erupted and quite literally buried the entire city alive. It is now famous for being entirely preserved and open to the public to discover the city and its remains that have been stood still in time for thousands of years.

5. Amalfi Coast


Located along the Sorrentine Peninsula in the Campania region is the absolutely divine Amalfi Coast. The 50-kilometre stretch of coastline is home to colourful fishing villages, dramatic cliff faces, secluded beaches, and stunning blue waters of the Mediterranean Sea. Several towns much up the Amalfi Coast and there are a few notable locations to visit while you are there. Positano, Sorrento, Praiano, and Minori are just a few of the most beautiful places along the Amalfi Coast.

6. Venice


Venice is truly one of the most romantic cities on earth. The north-eastern Italian city is built on more than 100 islands in the Adriatic Sea. There are no roads in Venice, simply just canals where you commute via the water on boats. You cannot visit Venice with out jumping aboard a Gondola and being chauffeured around the romantic city, while being serenaded by an expert gondolier.
