Posted on the 20 January 2013 by Tftb @TFTB

Mega, the new file sharing website launched by Kim Dotcom is a huge success atleast on its launch day. Everybody by now has read about it somewhere. We tell you why you should care about it.

Mega

Million Users in One Day

250,000 user registrations. Server capacity on maximum load. Should get better when initial frenzy is over. Wow!!!

— Kim Dotcom (@KimDotcom) January 19, 2013

Thousands of registrations per second, to 250,000 registration in less than 3 hours. Since the launch of Mega, its userbase is growing. No one really cares what had happened a year ago with Kim Dotcom, rather his history with the Feds seems to have gained him more support than anything. From 250,000 to million users on the first day. That’s a huge number of registrations for a site on its launch day. You know you want to be part of a website which attracts so many committed users on the first day itself.

Free Tier

free tier

This tech era has made us store so much data online that we are always looking for more and more free cloud storage. Dropbox and Skydrive at times is not enough with their free space. Mega gives you 50GB of free storage. The best part they encrypt all your files by default. This means no one except the uploader or a file can see what it contains unless they share the private key with someone else. So if you are worried your data might be removed like it did with Megaupload, this might not be the case this time. You can limit your parallel uploads nd downloads as well control the upload speed limit. The free tier is and always will be free.

Kim Dotcom

This man has been in news right from his crazy arrest to his Mega launch party. Kim Dotcom is known for his craziness in everything. Despite a very controversial arrest, this man managed to take back control of the distressed situation and launch a new website with similar attributes as his old site with a simple twist of encryption key making him almost as safe as other cloud services like Dropbox or Google Drive etc.

Crazy Encryption

MEGA stands for MEGA Encrypted Global Access. The file sharing site has changed a lot from what it used to be when it was Megaupload.

What is MEGA User Controlled Encryption?

All files stored on MEGA are encrypted. All data transfers from and to MEGA are encrypted. And while most cloud storage providers can and do claim the same, MEGA is different – unlike the industry norm where the cloud storage provider holds the decryption key, with MEGA, you control the encryption, you hold the keys, and you decide who you grant or deny access to your files, without requiring any risky software installs. It’s all happening in your web browser!

If you want to understand its encryption read this article by Gizmodo.

Megaupload

We all know no matter how this has changed, Mega is still the polished version of Megaupload version 2.0 . And if you used Megaupload you would be missing its service. Mega is just that but with a different way to store/access/share your data.

Megakey and Megamovies

megamovies

With the launch of Mega, Kim Dotcom promised he would be relaunching Megakey and megamovies which was a fully working beta website just ready for public release when he was arrested. This time megakey would be integrated intelligently in megamovies. As they say, Megamovies would change how we watch movies completely.

Developer API

Mega has announced developer tools for developers to dive in and make amazing apps. The API is neatly laid out and there is complete API documentation in the SDK. Mobile and desktop clients can take advantage of this API and easily add this cloud storage service to their app. This open doors to many apps and services which would be made around Mega.

Return of Megavideo?

megavideo

This might be one of the biggest question on everyone’s mind. Would megavideo be coming back? Megavideo was one of the most used service provided my megaupload. What it does was converted all the videos uploaded on megaupload to a streamable content on their own web player. Though megaupload never encrypted the data, there still is a possibility that Mega could start a similar service. This would require them to decrypt it first and then covert it to their own format to play on custom web player.

We are still not sure how many services of megaupload would be restored with different features and different names but Kim Dotcom seems to be a happy man for now. His ‘startup’ has attracted millions of users within few days and its growing rapidly. They claim to be using the most advanced technology any website has every used and many of the HTML5 elements which are just in Chrome as of now and no other browser has introduced most of the elements. Their servers are built ground up by his own team, site has be designed with keeping copyright claims and piracy issues in mind. This makes their website and server free from piracy claims and copyright infringements.

Just a small warning, do not forget your password. You cannot reset it

Unfortunately, your MEGA password is not just a password – it is the master encryption key to all of your data. If you lose it, you lose access to all of your files that are not in a shared folder and that you have no previously exported file or folder key for .
