7 Things You Should Know Before You Travel Solo in Thailand

By Robin Salvador @vinzsalvador23

Thailand is one of the hottest tourist destinations in the world right now; it's no surprise either. There's the gorgeous landscape, the vibrant food scene and the local culture that combine to make an exciting adventure. Yet, there are some important things you should know before you arrive. Whether you're teaching English in Thailand or simply a tourist, here are some travel tips to traverse Thailand like a pro!

The Elderly Are Highly Revered

In Thailand, the elderly are respected by the way people interact with them. For instance, if you address someone who is older than you, never call them by their first name. This is considered to be quite rude and will not be appreciated.

In addition to this, you should call everyone "sir" and "ma'am." This is even true for those who you befriend. Thailand is a country that places value on proper etiquette, so you may want to invest in a good guide before you go.

Never Showboat or Be Arrogant

In the same vein as being polite to the elderly, it's a big no-no to showboat or be arrogant. As an American who has traveled overseas often, I come by other American's who are loud and occasionally come off as "untouchable."

This isn't to bash my fellow countrymen, but it's something that seems to be almost innate within the American culture. Keep your voice low and make sure you're paying reverence to those who are around you.

Buy Gear and Medical Insurances

Anything can happen while you're on the road no matter how safe the country feels. I wouldn't suggest ever traveling to Thailand without both gear and medical insurances. These will replace any lost or stolen items and cover any unfortunate incidents that could occur.

There are many travel insurance companies you can go through such as World Nomads , , and Insure My Trip . Coverage plans are flexible too, allowing you to buy exactly what you need without shelling out more than you're willing to pay.

Buy Fresh Produce at the Local Markets

The local markets in Thailand are a must-see. Sure, the country is already inexpensive, but the markets are a great way to save even more money. Plus, you can't beat the fresh produce. You'll be able to find a market no matter where you travel as they are a much-loved affair and occur daily.

What I enjoy most about Thailand markets are shopping next to the locals and feeling as if I am living like one myself.

Mosquitoes Are Something Fierce

Dealing with mosquitoes in Thailand is going to be one of your constant battles. To win every battle, you will need to buy plenty of mosquito spray and travel during peak hours. Mosquitoes are worse in the morning than during midday, so keep this in mind if you plan on doing any hikes.

Remember Your Safe Sex Principles

Thailand is known for their prostitution, but this doesn't mean that it's legal. It's in fact a very dangerous issue within the country, so you should avoid this at all cost. While it can be tempting to slosh out of a bar and enjoy a pleasurable evening for a low-price, you may cause a lifetime of issues.

STDs run rampant in the sex-industry community. Not only that, it's potentially just a scam to rip you off, which brings me to my next point...

Avoid the Scams

Scammers exist everywhere in the world, but they are especially common in markets where the USD has a high value over local currency. Take a look at the most common scams in Thailand to educate yourself about what's out there. You'll then be able to take active precautions to avoid them all together.

Traveling across Thailand is a once in a lifetime experience, so enjoy it. Thailand isn't a dangerous or unwelcoming place. The people are as pristine as the expansive beaches, but there are still things to keep in mind. Jot down these tips so you can travel Thailand like a pro!
