63rd Annual GRAMMY Nominees + Reactions

By Phjoshua @thereviewsarein

The 63rd Annual (2021) nominees have been announced across 83 categories with some big names, some surprising snubs, and a long list of talent.

We've got the entire list of categories and nominees here, but we also wanted to share some thoughts about the nominations, so I asked Trish and our pal (Lifestyle Editor at Yahoo Style Canada) to have a look and pass over their words to go along with mine.

Here we go!

The Thoughts and Reactions!

Joshua: As a fan of music across multiple popular genres I was excited to see Taylor Swift, Mickey Guyton, Maren Morris, The Highwomen, Harry Styles, Phoebe Bridgers, James Taylor, and more pick up nominations this year. All of their categories are packed, so it's hard to know if they'll take home any awards, but seeing them mentioned is fantastic.

I also got feelings seeing names including John Prine, Nipsey Hussle, and Alex Trebek, who have all left us and left holes in the entertainment industry, being nominated. It's bitter sweet and excellent to see them recognized.

Some really great songs started playing in my head when I was reading the nominations - and the one that popped on me (that I don't know I was expecting) was Dua Lipa's Don't Start Now. What an amazing pop track. As Elizabeth mentions, her categories are loaded with big name contenders, but it sure is a fun song.

Trish: We've been asking the people who make "those" decisions, to take a more balanced looked at including women in music, particularly award shows and festival lineups. By choosing six woman-fronted bands in the Rock Performance category, the 2021 Grammy Awards have taken that request to the next level. My question now is, did they go too far? Were there no male-fronted bands that deserved a nomination?

On first look, the country categories feel nicely balanced, until you get to the Best Country Album category. The five nominees include four individual women and a four-piece band that is 50% woman-fronted. I hesitate to say it, but this doesn't feel right? Don't get me wrong, these are good albums, but I can't believe the pendulum has swung so far that there were no male artists worthy of the nomination.

Equality and tokenism are the words swimming around in my brain.

Elizabeth: The Weeknd being snubbed for Grammy noms is just another example of the disconnect between audience reception and the awards circuit. For whatever reason, The Weeknd follows in the footsteps of artists like Katy Perry, Nicki Minaj, Snoop Dogg and Blake Shelton who have never taken home Grammy hardware. It's unfortunate - but doesn't diminish their success.

On the other hand, this year is also vindication for Taylor Swift who was snubbed for Reputation and although nominated, went home empty handed for her last album, Lover. Folklore is perhaps Swift's best work to date - and I think the one to beat for Album of the Year.

I was so excited to see D Smoke nominated for Best New Artist and Best Rap Album. I let out a shriek of excitement when I saw his nominations were announced.I think it's proof that reality shows like "Rhythm & Flow" still have the ability to catapult artists to stardom - even though he's been writing and performing for years.

Dua Lipa is perhaps one of the biggest innovators of pop music in the past decade. With two Grammy's under her belt already, I wouldn't be surprised if she takes home the award for Pop Solo Performance or Pop Vocal Album. Even though she's up against heavyweights like Taylor Swift and Harry Styles - Future Nostalgia is the quintessential pop album out of all the nominees.

So there you have it, some thoughts about the list - but we want yours as well. Leave a comment at the bottom of the post or get at us on social media to tell us what you think!
