Although summer is the perfect vacation time, the kids are out of school, and the weather is perfect for getting away. There are some special destinations, as well as fares that are discounted for couples and families.
The biggest tip is to plan early, because the longer out the trip is, the better deals you can get. Especially when it’s peak vacation time and they’re not fully booked.
1. Take advantage of travel membership programs and frequent flier miles.
Never pay full price and while you’re at it make sure you are earning some kind of discount on your next booking. There are a number of great online accommodation booking services around these days including HotelClub which offer not only the lowest price guaranteed but also a decent discount on your subsequent booking.
When flying, always make sure you sign up to any relevant frequent flier program – they are usually free – and if you fly a lot you will be certain to earn enough for a free flight quicker than you imagine.
2. Consider land travel:
Depending upon where you are, there is land travel available in some form. Travelling by train is often very affordable and you get the added bonus of enjoying the countryside and being able to get up and move around. If you’re a fan of road tripping, make sure you bring your GPS or purchase the maps on your smart phone to save on renting one from the car rental company.
3. Food:
This is where most people spend a fortune because you are on vacation, you deserve a good meal, and eating at finer restaurants may be wonderful, but it cuts into your savings account. Consider the following tips:
ü Pack a picnic
ü Eat at street carts, food vans and inexpensive pubs, for great hearty meals.
ü Plan in advance by signing up to daily deal sites such as Groupon for the city you are going and buy discount vouchers for popular restaurants.
ü Bring non-perishable food for snacks on the go
ü Buy breakfast in the grocery store and simply store it in the hotel fridge.
ü Always bring a canteen or or refillable bottle to avoid wasting money on bottled water.
4. Attractions:
Many of the most incredible museums and galleries in the world offer free admission days, in most places this is either Mondays or Tuesdays. Consider planning to visit attractions when they are free. You can get a list of free sights at most local tourist offices so check the free sights first.
5. Shopping:
You must be able to curb or sharpen your shopping skills while vacationing. Try shopping on street markets and small vendors that are not in the main shopping venues, but can offer some very interesting, and cheap wares.
Most of all make an effort to go with the least expensive options, set a budget, and stick to it!
