SEO Tips for Small Business

Would you like more people to see what your business offers? Marketing and advertising are integral elements of operating a business. SEO, or search engine optimization, helps improve online exposure.

Small businesses do not have the marketing budget of larger competitors. However, minding a number of SEO tactics helps business vendors expose products and services to web browsers.

Technical

SEO processes involve communicating a web page’s information to a particular search engine, such as Google. A webmaster needs to ensure the technical aspects of a site are established and optimized for good communication, influencing impending exposure. For instance, a webmaster may modify a given page’s meta tags, changing how a search engine reads, catalogues, and later serves a page based on a query.

Hire an in-house technical specialist or outsource SEO needs . Without the proper technical setup, a website and respective pages cannot effectively communicate information, limiting exposure to consumers and leverage on competition.

Focus on Keywords

Imagine your web pages are present in a huge resource book. How would you catalogue your site’s pages in a master index? What keywords or phrases best represent your pages’ information? What words or phrases do you want a respective page to address?

Blog

Establish an editorial calendar, and begin writing posts on germane topics of consumer interest. Ask for feedback from readers, and write for the reader rather than for exposure.

Links

Webmasters often link to other sites, enriching reader experiences and abilities to attend to queries. Search engines use links to weigh a website’s authority; if your site links to another site, search engines reward that site, making it more relevant based on the link’s anchor text.

For instance, if you own a used car site and a website links to it with the anchor text of “used cars,” Google will make your site more relevant regarding “used cars” searches. Furthermore, if the linking site is of high authority, it makes a bigger impression; so, it’s important to build a number of links to your website, establishing authority on the web.

Social Media

As mentioned above, the web is a place of interaction. Social media sites, such as Facebook, allow users to interact and share information. Imagine the ability to ask consumers questions, offer coupons, and experience the benefit of ongoing advocacy, all done through a computer screen and social media platform.

How are you differentiating your brand from those of competitors? Using social media platforms allows for greater degrees of expression and interaction.

Affiliates

Affiliates help promote your brand’s products/services in exchange for reflexive exposure or commission. The process allows for exposure to a larger market of people. For instance, your business may sell guitars, while an affiliate site advertises a brick-and-mortar tattoo parlor. While your online campaign is not targeting the keywords of the affiliate (ex: tattoo), the brands share an overlapping market, making them a good fit for affiliate partnership.
