So this mom gig it seems has rekindled me with my coffee cravings. Back when I was working in the corporate sector coffee was a necessity (read about when I decided to work for myself rather than someone else here). These days I really just enjoy coffee and will take any opportunity to have one, often with cake and several times a day.
As mentioned in my foodie musings in March, finding baby friendly inner city cafes brewing quality coffee has been a challenge and it was even tougher finding cafes open after 4pm.
So here it is, 11 months in the making, some of my favorite baby friendly Perth coffee spots…the list started out really small, I even traded off good coffee to just be somewhere baby friendly. I’m glad to have since taken off my dining out with a baby training wheels
The list continues to grow every coffee drinking day so here’s 5 to start off with, otherwise this post will never get published.
#1 Hobart Deli – North Perth
Hobart Deli in North Perth was a random discovery. I was catching up with my friend Mia for coffee and needed somewhere close to home that was open after 4pm. A quick look on Zomato brought up Hobart Deli which is a 2-minute drive from place and WOW what a discovery that was.
There’s a little gated park across the road from Hobart Deli which has a playground for the older kids and plenty of grass for baby play dates. Plus this café brews a quality latte and the lemon meringue is AMAZING…
So amazing, I went back three days later for a latte and lemon meringue again. Kudos to the Chef who turns out to be instagram @eliseknowles husband.
If you fancy sitting inside Hobart Deli, there’s also high chairs available.
#2 Yahava Koffeeworks – Swan Valley
Breathtaking views, plenty of grass, high chairs readily available, kids tables…drive through coffee! Need I say more? Plus to top it off, I had the most amazing salted caramel slice…I didn’t waste any time getting cutlery and just ate it with a popsicle stick.
I also hasd a craving for something warm and although I really felt like hot chips, this ham and cheese croissant did the trick.
#3 Blue Lotus Cafe inside Waldecks – Karrinyup
I still remember driving to Waldecks when I just had junior burger and thinking “I can’t believe I’m going to Waldecks for coffee”. It was surprisingly good coffee & cake! Desserts are made offsite by a caterer and delivered to Waldecks.
This pear and blueberry slice was actually pretty similar to my Italian mother-in-law’s pear & raspberry cake…
# 4 Sherbet – Maylands
I was at one point, visiting Sherbet weekly after taking junior burger swimming. The outdoor space is enough to fit two prams and there’s free street parking on Eight Ave and Whatley Cres. Plus these guys make the BEST red velvet cake in Perth. Quality coffee too.
Here’s a more detailed write up on Sherbet.
# 5 Whistler’s Chocolate Factory – Middle Swan
There’s limited lunch options at Whistler’s but the scones & coffee are good. Plus most importantly (for me) there’s plenty of grass for junior burger to play, high chairs and a baby change room.
What I look out for when dining out with my baby
When out with junior burger, I value…
• Considerate staff – those who take coffee around rather than over junior burger’s pram – yep it has happened many times while she is in it!
• Open spaces / alfresco seating -so I don’t get all flustered if junior burger starts testing out her voice
• Easy pram access – otherwise ramps, lifts or escalators will do! Carrying (a well-fed) junior burger up flights of stairs ain’t fun
• Baby change room facilities – more so when she was younger and needed milk every two hours!
• Availability of high chairs – this is more important to us now as junior burger doesn’t like to sit in her pram for long
