Copenhagen was a surprise destination, added to our itinerary when we realized we had a free day between professional commitments in Stockholm and Malmo. So, we decided to explore Copenhagen.
We arrived after the sunset, it was a long travel day. I don't think I mentioned that we had car trouble near Vastervik that required us to find a service station. And we had to change hotel rooms. After settling into our new room and talking to our son, we decided to enjoy a meal at the hotel.
After a good nights sleep, I was up and out walking before 7 AM. I had one day in the city and wasn't going to miss one minute!
Our hotel was a few blocks from old town, on the Inderhavnen (a waterway/canal). The perfect location for the walking explorer. Copenhagen reminded me of Budapest, where we also had a river view. Coffee shops everywhere, people outside, and while the architecture is completely different, the vibe is similar.
Can you believe all these photos were captured using my iphone? I travel with a DSLR and tripod but seldom use it these days. For me, the iphone quality is wonderful AND it gives me a freedom to snap and live in the moment.

Look at this coffeeshop - divine
Woven into the photos above are stops for coffee, lunch, and surviving a wind storm. We wrapped up the day with a tour of the Carlsberg Brewery and dinner at a local establishment.
Observations and Touristy Things
- Spend a few minutes researching before you visit. There is so much to see.
- Stroll through the verdant gardens surrounding Frederiksberg Palace
- Experience Smorrebrod, is traditional to the Swedes and Danes.
- Norrebro, home to a pair of new craft beer bars, Danish design shops, antiques and galleries.
- This is the dirtiest city we have visited on our Nordic Holiday. Nothing like NYC, but I didn't expect to see cigarette's on the ground, and occasional trash.
- This is a bicycle culture! Walk/drive with caution during rush hour.
- Christianshavn, A merchant town with river bridges and beautiful views.
- The shopping looks amazing! with one more day, I would have window shopped/ gathered new design ideas. I did jot down a few shoppes that I hope to visit online.
- The eclectic Tivoli Gardens wasn't open during our visit but it's a must see. Opened in 1843, and was the inspiration behind Walt Disney’s theme parks.
- Copenhagen is such an easy city to explore and walk through the main attractions around the center of town which are clustered around Slotsholmen.
- Time didn't allow but it we had one more day I would have enjoyed visiting Rosenborg Castle or the Christiansborg Palace.
- Ravnsborggade street has many quirky, cool shops and antique stores worth visiting
Urban is meeting us bright and early the next day, to travel back to Sweden. We have three days left.
Next Stop: Malmo and flying back to Geneva to attend the Geneva Auto Show.
