21 Days of Gratitude: Day 10 – Alternative Medicine & Chiropractic Care for Children & Infants

By Lindsayleighbentley @lindsayLbentley

I know that you naturally expect for me to be a fan of Alternative Medicine, but what good is talking about it without some proof to back it up?

Day 10 – I am thankful for Alternative Medicine

I have a bit of a secret:  I’ve struggled with eczema my whole life, well, since I was about 4 years old.  I can trace it’s start back to those last set of booster shots (ever notice how many allergies, asthma, ADD, Autism and eczema start right around this time in children?)  Eczema is the reason I started looking into this natural lifestyle in the first place, after mainstream medicine had failed to cure me for 20+ years.

Anyhow, I’ve recently started seeing this amazing Doctor, Carolyn Maxfield.  If you are in the Nashville area, I highly recommend giving her a call.  My mom lives out of state, but is going to start seeing her when she is here!

Dr. Maxfield practices Chiropractic (gentle release – hooray for no more “snap, crackle, pop!”) as well as nutrition and whole-body healing.

If you have ever heard someone talk about seeing a “Wellness Chiropractor” as opposed to a pediatrician or family practice Doctor, this is what they are talking about.

She is going to help me be free from eczema for good.  I am so excited.

Now, like any doctor, there are good ones and bad ones.

Some want to take x-rays, on everyone, at the very first visit. In my opinion, doing an x-ray right off the bat is possibly causing more harm than good.  X-rays expose your body to radiation.  Radiation damage is cumulative, which means that the less of it you are exposed to, the better.  I do not believe that x-rays in chiropractic treatment should be used except in extreme circumstances.

There are also Chiropractors who just whip you around, popping every joint and vertebrae in your body the same way each time without taking the time to address YOUR specific problem.  This is not only unnecessary, but can be dangerous.

Then there are Chiropractors like the one I have found.  She assesses and diagnoses the problem, addresses it specifically and intentionally with a very gentle, yet effective method.

It’s is so gentle and precise, it is safe and extremely beneficial for children and babies.

Yep, you heard me.  Chiro for infants.  It can actually completely cure a host of problems for little ones from poor sleep to colic!  All of my kids have gone to a chiropractor as newborns to release any locked up bones in the skull, and align the spine which is often a bit out of whack from birth.

I’ll be sharing my personal journey in future posts, but for now, I want to share what she did for my sweet Miles.

Miles has never been to the Doctor for a sick visit. In fact, other than his “day after he was born well-check” he has never been to a doctor.  We are so thankful that he has no known disease or allergies, and so he recovers from illness very quickly and I have always been able to treat him at home.

However, 2 weeks ago he started coughing something fierce.  It was paired with a snotty nose, but I didn’t think much of it until his nap when I heard him choking and gasping for air.

You. Guys.

I am usually calm in these situations but it took every ounce of resolve that I had to keep from freaking out.

I have a newfound empathy for parents of children with asthma – there is not much more terrifying than witnessing your child struggling to breathe.

I did what I knew to do immediately:

  • I gave him colloidal silver through a nebulizer (in case it was a bacterial infection)
  • I did R.C. on his chest and spine.
  • Once he calmed down, I gave him a spoonful of raw, local honey with minced raw garlic.
  • I sat him upright, leaning on my chest as the coughing was worse when he laid down.
  • Then, I called Dr. Maxfied.  She graciously agreed to meet me at her office (it was 6pm on a Friday!)

She diagnosed his condition (a bacterial infection) using muscle testing.  I could do a whole post on this miraculous method, but in short, it’s a non-invasive way of testing the body to diagnose illness, allergies, sensitivities, etc. and the proper treatment for those.

She did a gentle spinal adjustment and showed me how to do a lymph massage (which I did with R.C. and Thieves.).  She also gave me a few herbs – one to boost his immune system, and the other to help clear the gunk that I used in the nebulizer.

By the time we got home he was already much better.

He spiked a low-fever (this is a good thing!) and slept peacefully through the night.

By the next evening he was 100% – we even got to go to a Vanderbilt football game together!

If you have been skeptical (like I was years ago) about natural and alternative medicine, I encourage you to find a great Naturopath or Wellness Chiropractor.  Give them a try.  The speed and effectiveness of these treatments is truly incredible.  And the best part?  No nasty side effects.  No masking of symptoms.  No “add-on” prescriptions to deal with the side effects of the first ones. It’s true, real healing for “incurable” diseases and ailments.

Natural and alternative treatment is founded on whole-body wellness and true healing for life by treating the core issue.  It’s been around for thousands of years and many practitioners are using techniques developed centuries ago because they have been proven to be effective for so long.

I just got home from my own visit with her and I am so excited to share my journey with you!  Stay tuned!

live well. be well.
