15 Best Things Said To a Griever

By Yourtribute @yourtribute

The pain of losing someone you love and care about stays with us for the rest of our lives. The thing about pain and grief is that it never really goes away; we just learn to live with it. We get better at handling the loss, day by day.

If you have ever lost someone close to you, you’ll remember how broken you felt when you first lost them. Getting through the pain is a journey that everyone must make for themselves but it helps a lot to have someone supporting us through it and being by our side at all times.

There are quite a few ways you can help a griever, here are some of the best;

Just be with them

What really helps the griever get through the pain is having a loved one by them. If words don’t work show your support through a nice hug. And, never be afraid to talk about the person who passed away. In fact, talking about that person and the sweet memories they left behind will actually help.

Often times, you will find that there is nothing much to talk about. Don’t bail at such times, just sit with them!

Help the griever

Losing a loved one can cause the griever to go into depression and just give up on everything. If you care about them, you must help them through this by not only showing emotional support but by taking care of any urgent chores and errands.

Assist them in the funeral

Most people don’t pre-plan their funerals and that means their family has to pay for the entire funeral immediately when the person passes away. With funeral costs and price of headstones for graves going up day by day, arranging the funds immediately can get a little tricky. You can show your support by helping the family pay the funeral service.

Talking to a person who lost a loved one

Talking to the griever and saying some calming words to them is really important. Sadly, many of us don’t really know how to talk to a person who has just lost someone they loved and adored. To help you with that, here are 15 nice things you can say to them;

  1. “There are no words. Just know that I’m here for you.”
  2. “I’m so sorry for your loss.”
  3. “What I admired the most about him/her is that…”
  4. “Tell me more about her/him.”
  5. “If you ever want to talk, about anything, I’m here for you.”
  6. “You don’t have to say anything; I’ll just sit beside you.”
  7. “Don’t feel embarrassed. What you are feeling is normal.”
  8. “Let me know if I can help”
  9. “You are not going crazy”
  10. “I love you and I’m here for you.”
  11. “S/he’ll always be in our hearts.”
  12. “S/he would be proud of you.”
  13. “I’ll be praying for you and him/her.”
  14. “We will get through this together.”
