The lunar new year is filled with good fortune and red envelopes filled with cash. This year’s holiday has special meaning for many Asians because of the anti-Asian racism of 2021. The holiday is celebrated by countries in East. Each year is represented by an animal and a natural element, with the cycle repeating over time. The Metal Ox was a time for hard work and enduring challenges. The Water Tiger is an animal that symbolizes strength and balance. The big cat is tamed by the water element.
We caught up with 12 designers, buyers, and other fashion people of Asian descent to ask them what the Year of the Water Tiger means to them, and what they hope for the next 12 months to come. Read on for their answers.

The tiger symbolizes change through bravery and courage. Our collective humanity is protected by it. It reminds us to protect what is most important in life.
We need to bring communities together by creating an understanding of each other’s heritage and experiences. Through an inclusive process, we can appreciate what makes our family so special.

I want the Year of the Tiger to be a time when we can all be proud of who we are. It feels like we deserve better fortune because we have been through so much.
After two years of being isolated due to the Pandemic, I am looking forward to new opportunities and spending more time with my friends and family.

I was born in the Year of the Fire Tiger, which is why the Year of the Tiger is important to me. I have only been able to see my parents for the first time in three years, but I have been spending a lot of time with them in New York.
It makes me think about my loved ones. You have to say that you love them no matter what. I will be doing more of that in the upcoming year, and I will also try to take some time for myself.
I hope to live fearless. It has been my number one priority, no matter what year it is.

I am ready for what this year will symbolize if we can retire the mentality of the Year of the Ox. As we enter into 2022, it is what we need.
My community has been through some rough times recently with hate and violence directed at us for no reason other than being who we are. I’ve been proud to see us stand up and fight, but that’s just the beginning. I am hoping that the fiery, passionate, rebellion trait that has come to mark the Tiger will give us even more confidence to have our voices heard and to have our faces represented. The leader of the jungle is ready.

A cute tiger will be posted on our door. My sister has to wear a red luck charm bracelet for a few months because she was born under the same animal, which is not considered good fortune.
I hope that we continue to have a happy and healthy family.

I honor our traditional symbols of new beginnings, such as cherry blossoms, new clothes, and a clean house, during the lunar new year.
I FaceTiming my parents in Vietnam on January 31 as their New Year was 15 hours before mine. Prayers were exchanged for health, fortune, and a family reunion very soon in 2022. The context of global trauma has drawn us closer, and we have grown to appreciate our time together as a family, especially during an important holiday like Tt.

The Year of the Tiger will give us strength, courage, and wisdom to understand the impermanence of our everyday freedoms. The new year is a time for me to reflect and celebrate in simple moments, to celebrate our communities, and to honor family.

I think the Asian way of being fierce is to channel the Tiger spirit and be brave and confident with grace. After two years of fighting with the Pandemic, this energy is needed. I want to enter this new year with Tiger-like energy because I have witnessed hate but also amazing unity.

We should take encouragement from the positive vibes that come from the Year of the Tiger, as we close the year with unprecedented hate, violence, deaths, and epidemics. The Tiger is the king of the jungle in Chinese mythology. He is able to deal with hardship. He fights back.
Being reminded of the strength and endurance of my ancestors inspired me to fight the Pandemic. It gave me the strength to stand up against hate and ignorance that still looms, and gave me the courage to show my son the characteristics of Tiger. I was born in the Year of the Dog, but my father is a Tiger, and I hope to be a Tiger mom for Baby G in the very best sense of the word.

I think the Year of the Tiger is a good time to create our own paths in life because we are living in a moment where we need to create our own paths in life. Bringing our culture into the larger narrative is what we need to do.

The Year of the Tiger is an animal that symbolizes strength, courage, and bravery, so I’m excited to celebrate it. My family and I will be celebrating at home with a red dress and takeout from our go-to NYC Chinese restaurants. We love eating the dumplings because they symbolize wealth and good fortune. Since eating a whole fish brings prosperity, we will be ordering from Joe’s Shanghai, where they famous soup dumplings and the Chilean sea bass. Since they represent longevity and happiness, noodles from there are a must.

I am no exception, and the last year was difficult for everyone. I made a major change in my career, and my husband and I have had challenges with our families health-wise. I hope the Year of the Tiger will start with a roar and bring us all back to embracing life, in addition to giving me some stability on a personal level. The year of the Ox is supposed to be a good one for those who were born in it, and I am looking forward to it.
