Do you ever wonder if the health related warnings we’re told as children hold any truth? Or if they’re just old wives tales? Mami always told me that if I left the house with wet hair I’d catch pneumonia. I’ve left the house and the gym almost a million times with wet hair and I have never had pneumonia. This is not to say that it couldn’t play a factor, amongst many factors, that could lead me to get pneumonia. I just haven’t been able to prove her theory. I wonder if its something that she was told as a child and like all mothers, we fell the need to warn our children? Read on to see 10 health myths you might think are true.

Thanks to the great people at Gompels Healthcare we have this great infographic that shares 10 health myths that need to go away. Lets see which ones I thought were true! We’ll compare notes in the comment section below!

Of the 10 health myths I’ve heard, I thought these were true:

  • Feed a cold, starve a fever . . . I don’t always have chicken soup when I’m sick but I always feel better when my mom would serve me a bowl. Hot soup is yummy in the tummy.
  • Cracking your knuckles will give you arthritis . . . hearing this freaked me out because I would hate to have arthritis in my hands! Sometimes you just need to do it though, right?
  • Sitting too close to the TV will mess up your eyes . . . I remember the other day saying it to my Godson who was right in front of the big screen. I always thought it was the reason why I had to wear glasses! :-O

These health myths I knew were not true:

  • You don’t need to wear sunblock on cloudy days . . . just because the sun is shining doesn’t mean the rays can’t get through the clouds. I actually had a challenge many moons ago that had me research the difference between UVA and UVB. Along that journey I learned that even on cloudy days you can still be burned and exposed to harmful rays. Keep your skin healthy and use protection!
  • If your mucus turns green you need antibiotics . . . I’ve been sick enough to know that this is not true. If you have a virus antibiotics will not help. You have to ride it out. Knock on wood I haven’t been that sick this year!

Have you heard of any of these myths? Did you think any of them were true? What other health myths have you heard of?

Until then,
