Vitamin D deficiency and pregnancy
Several studies have shown a link between vitamin D deficiency and various problems encountered during pregnancy. A Canadian team conducted a literature review and meta-analysis of 31 studies on this subject.
It appears that low levels of vitamin D (25-OH rate vitamin D <75 nmol / l) is associated with an increased risk of gestational diabetes, pre-eclampsia and growth retardation. On the other hand, a deficiency of vitamin D (25-OH rate vitamin D <37.5 nmol / l) is associated with an increased risk of vaginitis and a low birth weight. However, no link can be established with the risk of caesarean section.
Observational studies have found the existence of a link between low levels of vitamin D and certain diseases of pregnancy, however we do not yet know precisely the optimal level of 25-OH vitamin D required, nor a real interest vitamin D supplementation during pregnancy and lactation.
Recent studies showed that daily supplementation with vitamin D 800-1000 IU had one towards a low birth weight protective effect. However, the optimal dose is not yet well defined, and the work varies between 600 and 2000 IU / day.
