The Old Vic Has Received 20 Allegations Of Inappropriate Behavior Against Kevin Spacey
After Kevin Spacey was accused of being a handsy creep, London’s Old Vic theater (where Kevin was artistic director from 2004 to 2015) was accused of keeping their mouths shut about numerous allegations against him. So the Old Vic started a tip line where people could anonymously call with their own stories. Page Six says the Old Vic received 20 complaints against him. The allegations span from 1995 to 2013, and include reports of behavior that made people feel uncomfortable, to “sexually inappropriate” touching. None of the reported allegations involve rape. All 20 allegations involve men.
The Old Vic released a statement regarding the 20 reports, explaining why Kevin’s alleged behavior went unchecked for so long. They also gave a not-subtle hint to the ages of some of the victims:
“During his tenure, The Old Vic was in a unique position of having a Hollywood star at the helm around whom existed a cult of personality. The investigation found that his stardom and status at The Old Vic may have prevented people, and in particular junior staff or young actors, from feeling that they could speak up or raise a hand for help.”
The tip line was part of an investigation initiated by the Old Vic theater in October after Anthony Rapp came forward with his story of Kevin groping him at 14. The Old Vic hired a law firm to conduct the investigation. They invited Kevin to participate, but he turned them down (he’s a little busy in rehab at the moment).
A partner at the firm says that they found no evidence of common suspicion about Kevin’s alleged behavior, adding that, “There wasn’t widespread knowledge of this.” Um, on what planet? It was my understanding that everyone knew. Literally the only way you could come to the conclusion that nobody at the theater knew nothing was if the interview was limited solely to a hearing-impaired, near-sighted 94-year-old ticket-ripper named Eugenie. And even she might pull you aside with her cane and advise you not to be alone with Kevin Spacey.
