Super Immunity????? Maybe, Just Maybe.

By Sarahohm @sarahohm
Hey Loveys,
Today was one of my appointments with my diabetes doctor. You know, the one I have a crush on? I wish I could spend more time with him talking diabetes and working out and running, but I really only get to talk with him for about 5 minutes. It's bitter and sweet all at the same time. His technical name is an endocrinologist. I've had a few endo's in my time with diabetes (14 years) and I don't think I've ever spent the least amount of time with a doctor in my life, which is bitter because he's totally my favorite doctor of all time. He comes in, small talks me a little bit, tell me what I need to change on my insulin pump settings and he's gone.
The endo I had before him was back in London, and well... she was my least favorite out of my doctors. I wish I only ever had to spend 5 minutes with her. I think one of the best things to come out of moving to Toronto is the fact that I got to switch doctors and the fact that I got Dr. Perkins. He's so nice and it's fun to make him happy with good blood sugars. Anyways, this time around I learned that I don't have to keep manual records of my blood sugars, how much insulin I have my pump give me and the times of all that stuff anymore because I can do it all through my pump and upload it online for my doc's to check out - neat right? I'm so stoked that I don't have to write everything down anymore. That was always a weak point for me especially when I was in a rush to do things, so this is perfect :). Yay!
Want to see the kind of insulin pump I have?
Super Immunity????? Maybe, Just Maybe.
That's not my hand nor my ACTUAL pump, but it is the pump that I have and am constantly wearing on me. I normally hide it in my bra (TMI?) so that people can't see it. I know that sounds strange, but I don't like drawing attention to it, nor do I want to answer questions about it, however I will answer questions online if you have it, because you can't see my awkwardness when discussing it online haha. You know, my new fav doctor wears an insulin pump, he's also a marathoner and super fit and handsome, but I don't think I've ever seen his pump. Hmm. Maybe he keeps it in his pocket. I don't think he wears a bra so that's probably not an option for him. I should ask him sometime.
So remember how last week I was cleansing and was starving the whole week? Do you also remember about a month ago when I wrote about WHY women get so hungry during PMS? Frig... so it's happening again and I can't seem to eat enough. This is going onto week number 2 of being constantly hungry. My stomach won't stop grumbling. I want to eat a huge dinner and see if that helps. Is anyone else not able to eat enough food this week, or is it just me?
Ok so confession time.
So I still haven't worked out. Not last week and not yet this week. UGH I feel bad about it, but also not really. This week has been a bit nuts and I've had a lot of stuff on my mind, which makes me feel like I should be exercising to help deal with everything, but I haven't because I've just been doing a ton of other things. Even as I lay sit here and write this, I'm yawning and debating having a short nap or busting out my anatomy books and studying. Maybe I should have a coffee. Regardless, tomorrow I'm back in the office (aka the gym) so I'm going to schedule in time to workout and stick to it. I actually got weighed at the doctors today and my lb's are a little bit above normal. By a little bit, I literally mean like 4-5lbs. Not a lot. However, I will be taking that as a challenge and need to work that stuff off! I'll keep you posted (FYI - current weight is 154, goal is 149. Just so you know the benchmark I'm starting at :P).
Super Immunity????? Maybe, Just Maybe.I'm currently watching Dr. Oz. I know that he has people who love him and there are people who hate him. He has the author of the Super Immunity Diet on his show today.... Hmm... I am listening and typing at the same time and it makes sense. If you don't want to get sick, eat foods that nourish your immune system. He's saying that men who eat like this could live till their 95 and women may live until their 100 or 105 (not tested out, obviously, just the authors opinion). There are four rules he states about getting the most from your food.
1. Eat phytonutrient rich foods. Mixing all colourful fruits and veggies together is the secret.
2. Eat slow absorbing foods. The opposite of fast food. Slow absorbing foods are beans, nuts, and seeds, they absorb over many hours and not instantly and they increase stool fats instead of allowing the fats absorb in your body.
3. Use meat as a condiment. If you eat too much animal product, it raises IGF1 hormone (insulin like growth factor 1) which promotes cancer, so using it as a condiment allows the bulk of the food be vegetables and fruits.
4. Add 10 more chews to every bite of food. The average person has 15 chews of food, so add 10 more to that to 25. Chewing greens better allow the enzymes to be activated by the saliva and helps promote cancer fighting properties from the food. Swallowing food down doesn't allow you to absorb a lot of the nutrients in food.
Super Immunity????? Maybe, Just Maybe.I'm waiting for the commercials to be over so I can find out the foods that he recommends so I can share them with you... da da daaaa.....
Ok we're back... so after listening, the Super Immune Diet looks A LOT like the Paleo Diet with the exception of beans. Beans are highly recommended in the Super Immune Diet but not so much in the Paleo diet. The author of the book said a couple of great quotes...
The whiter the bread, the quicker your dead...
The more you eat green, the more you get lean...
They are kind of true, right?
Have you heard of the Super Immunity Diet? What are your thoughts if so?
Are there still skeptics on the paleo diet out there? I'm curious to know if it's still growing like crazy, if people are learning the benefits of if people still think it's a fad diet?
