Sunday Salon — October 20

The scene: // Sunny and cool in a town waving the National League Pennant. I haven’t been much of a baseball fan in recent years after being disillusioned by the steroid era, but I used to be both a fan and a lover of the history of the game. A Cardinals versus Red Sox World Series makes both parts happy. But I have to go with the fan part for who to root for: Go Cards!

Listening to: // My Sunday playlist, currently a medley of two of my favorite hymns from childhood, “For the Beauty of the Earth” and “Come, Ye Thankful People Come.”

Currently reading: // I had to put down Brave Genius by Sean B. Carroll for awhile in order to get my book club book finished for our meeting this Thursday. We’re reading Before the Mayflower: A History of Black America by Lerone Bennett, Jr. I was told that black parents have their teens read this book so that they can see themselves in history. I’m astounded by the changes it’s making in this middle-aged white woman’s psyche. Every American should read this book — especially anyone who loves American history because this history is our history and it should be more prevalent in all of our history books.

Our Week 4 theme is Roots and Wings. Memories of home, leaving or finding it, and of travel or journeys. I have no idea, yet, what I’m going to do with this. Maybe travel. My trips since I started this blog are pretty well documented here, but I could scan old photos from earlier trips.

Looking forward to: // The Diversity Book Club meeting when we’ll be discussing the first seven chapters of Before the Mayflower.
