Slurpees: Eye Opening Facts

During the summer time you will notice there are more sugary drinks being consumed. Sugar has been shown to be a main cause in diabetes. Children’s diabetes is on the rise. We can prevent this from happening by being aware of the foods and drinks our families are consuming. One step in the right direction is to stay away from Slurpees.

A 16 oz coke Slurpee from 7-11 has 130 calories and 36 grams of sugar.

A large cherry Slurpee has 299 calories and 80 grams of sugar. That is almost a half a cup of sugar. Can you imagine sitting down and eating a half a cup of sugar? I’m sure you would get sick. Put it in a liquid form and it could be consumed easily.

Teaching our children how to make better choices when it comes to eating is our responsibility. If we educate them and check what they eat when they are with us they will be able to live a healthier life. We need to have our children become more active and eat higher nutrient dense foods. When we have accomplished this, then our children’s obesity rate will decline.

Children like sweet tasting foods. The temptations will be all around them outside of their home. Healthier food choices at home will help limit the sugary foods. They will be able to take this knowledge with them as they get older. Having these eating habits will help prevent them from becoming over weight and will help prevent many health related diseases.

Together we can make America healthy.
