For locally relevant businesses, one of the most important ranking factors in Google is the quality of citations. Citations are mentions of the company name, contact details, address and website, on other websites such as Yell.com, Yelp, Facebook and others.
These help to verify to Google that you're a real business with real marketing activities going on, and as a result they rank you higher in the Google Maps listing and organic listings because of it.
