Quiet by Susan Cain — A Read-Along

By Joyweesemoll @joyweesemoll

cover of Quiet by Susan CainDuring one of the Twitter Chats for the New Year’s Resolution Reading Challenge, we discovered that a number of us have been meaning to read Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can’t Stop Talking by Susan Cain. According to the From Left to Write Book Club, today is the paperback release (check out that post to enter a giveaway for a copy), so this seems like a good day to announce a read-along.

I hosted a read-along of The Power of Habit by Charles Duhigg earlier this month and that went well, modeling the structure on the read-alongs that Carl hosts on Stainless Steel Droppings. So, we’ll do that again.

Unlike with The Power of Habit, I haven’t read Quiet yet. According to the book jacket, “at least one-third of the people we know are introverts.” Are you one? Who in your circle is an introvert? The premise seems to be that introverts are under appreciated and this book attempts to redress that balance. There is a self-help aspect for introverts. Again, from the book jacket:

[S]he offers invaluable advice on everything from how to better negotiate differences in introvert-extrovert relationships to how to empower an introverted child to when it makes sense to be a “pretend extrovert.”

Join us as we read and discuss Quiet by Susan Cain, applying it to our lives and relationships. Quiet has four parts, but Part Three is short, so we’ll read it with Part Two, making this a once-a-week discussion for three weeks. I’ll email discussion questions on Saturday. If you want to participate on your own blog, post and link up on Quiet Read-Along day which will be Wednesday.  You can use or ignore the discussion questions as you wish. If you don’t have a blog or don’t feel like writing a post, participate in the comments to my post or the posts of other participants.

Part One. Read between now and February 13. Receive discussion questions e-mailed February 9. Link to discussion posted on February 13.

Parts Two and 3. Read February 13-20. Receive discussion questions e-mailed January February 16. Link to discussion posted on February 20.

Part Three. Read February 20-27. Receive discussion questions e-mailed January 23. Link to concluding discussion posted on February 27.

To receive the discussion questions each Saturday, let me know that you want them. The easiest way may be to leave a comment on this post (the email won’t be published, but I can see it in the backstage area of my blog) or send me an email at my yahoo address — joyweesemoll.

If you wish to do a sign-up post, that would help alert others to our Quiet Read-Along and increase participation. Link up in the list below so we can visit each other!
