Lena Dunham Feels That Her Only Problem Was Bad Timing

Dlisted favorite and attention enthusiast Lena Dunham cemented her “Most Hated Faux-Social Justice Warrior” status on Friday when she publicly disputed a woman’s rape allegation. Lena (alongside her frequent collaborator Jenni Konner) released a statement describing actress Aurora Perrineau’s rape allegation against Girls writer Murray Miller as “misreported.” To get an idea of how THAT went over, just take a scroll down yesterday’s comments section of that post and multiply by everyone on Twitter. Lena obviously realized that her backflip off the “women never lie about rape” stance she tweeted a few weeks back had earned her even more hatred than usual. So she released another statement yesterday and pretty much chalks it up to being the wrong time to say that Ms. Perrineau a liar.

Prior to backpedaling, Lena defended her defense of her accused rapist pal and explained why it’s so important to go to the mat for people “who have filled my world with love.” Ok, who’s been filling Lena’s world with love besides her vintage Judy Blume book dealer? Is it you, Taylor Swift? We’re going to need you to stop, Swifty, because it leads to things like her siding with men accused of violating teenagers. A little less love, please!

I believe in a lot of things but the first tenet of my politics is to hold up the people who have held me up, who have filled my world with love.

Lena then suddenly threw the wrong-mobile into reverse and tweeted her and Ms. Konner’s thoughts on why it’s so important to believe women. Except for this one because she’s accusing Lena’s friend (via People).

“As feminists, we live and die by our politics, and believing women is the first choice we make every single day when we wake up. Therefore I never thought I would issue a statement publically supporting someone accused of sexual assault but I naively believed it was important to share my perspective on my friend’s situation as it has transpired behind the scenes over the last few months.”

Translation – “I thought to myself how could I, Lena Dunham, savvy brand genius, insert myself into thissituation for the attention benefits? And goddamn, this one worked out even better than the time I told everyone that I wanted to have an abortion because I was jealous of all the women who have been lucky enough to get them!

“I now understand that it was absolutely the wrong time to come forward with such a statement and I am so sorry. We have been given the gift of powerful voices and by speaking out we were putting our thumb on the scale and it was wrong. We regret this decision with every fiber to our being.

Er, still waiting for the additional “I’m sorry I implied that you’re lying“…

“Every woman who comes forward deserves to be heard, fully and completely, and our relationship to the accused should not be part of the calculation anyone makes when examining her case.

Every person and every feminist should be required to hear her. Under patriarchy, ‘I believe you’ is essential. Until we are all believed, none of us will be believed. We apologize to any woman who have been disappointed.”

I think those women checked out on you around the time you got publicly enraged over your perception that a pro athlete wasn’t paying enough attention to your beauty at a dinner.

Okay, so maybe Lena does believe her? Am I reading this right or is it a lot of double-talking bullshit designed to save HBO production deals? It’s safe to go with the latter, right?
