Title: Voice Figures

Artist: Margaret Watts Hughes (1842-1907)

Margaret Watts Hughes was a Welsh singer, songwriter, scientist, and philanthropist. When she realized that sounds could create geometric shapes, she decided to experiment with her own voice. Her goal? Show what the human voice looks like!

She invented the Eidophone, through which she would sing. At the other end of the instrument was a glass or ceramic plate covered with a variety of powders and later liquid. The vibration of her voice then left unique patterns and shapes on the plate.

Hughes's work was eventually released in a book titled The Eidophone; Voice Figures: Geometrical and Natural Forms Produced by Vibrations of the Human Voice (1904). She was also the first woman to demonstrate her instrument for the Royal Society.
