Hasn’t Everyone Already Figured Out That Jimmy Fallon Doesn’t Care About Politics?

Once high atop the late-night pile as #1 with its “fun” mix of party games and celebrity ass-licking, The Tonight Show has sunk to third place in recent months. The reason? Because times are tough (and verging on terrifying), and people want to see a late-night host humiliate the current POTUS on a nightly basis. Enter Kimmel. Enter Colbert. Enter Meyers, and Noah! The Tonight Show’s host, jokey goon Jimmy Fallon, merely ruffled his hair. Hence, a show that focuses on Celebrity Beer Pong in 2017 has languished in the ratings. But Jimmy doesn’t care. Because Jimmy doesn’t care about politics!

In an interview with Today (via Vulture), Jimmy was asked why he doesn’t “aim an opening monolog flame-thrower at Trump on a nightly basis” on-ramp with the others. It’s because he’s not a political comedian, and is more concerned with “pop culture.” Honestly, so was I until we had a president who’s down with giving speeches to organizations that feature fliers about the “Hazards of Homosexuality.“ (Hazard #1: “Everyone assumes you love brunch.“)

“It’s just not what I do. I think it’d be weird for me to start doing it now,” he muses. “I don’t really even care that much about politics. I gotta be honest. I love pop culture more than I love politics. I’m just not that brain.”

Or any sort of brain! Jimmy took a lot of shit for “normalizing” the president when he had him on during the election from hell, skipped asking him any sort of tough questions, and then tousled his hair in a cutesy manner. Things haven’t been the same for Jim-Jim since. He also thinks that the other guys are already doing it, and doing it better than he ever could.

“I think the other guys are doing it very well. Colbert’s doing great. That’s what he’s good at. He’s great. He’s always into political comedy,”

Fallon insists that he does jokes about the President, but would only make it a centerpiece of his nightly show if it was “organicor his hosting gig was threatened by his dwindling ratings.

If Jimmy wants to get in on the action, he should just start bringing Tiffany Trump on to sing her breakout hit “Like A Bird“ every night. Make it the new Tonight Show theme song. It’s not directly insulting the president but it’s related. It will get Jimmy on the bandwagon, but still allow him to simper over Trump when that guy declares himself Lord God Emporer and abolishes voting.
