Good Grief

Posted on the 21 March 2024 by Sirmac2 @macthemovieguy

The first official 2024 film reviewed by me, and I saw it two months ago. I would love to be able to say that I remember this film well enough to comment on it in great detail, but sadly this writer/directorial feature debut from Dan Levy is so deeply forgettable. I know he plays a man who finds out his husband had some secrets after his husband dies, and he is trying to navigate the process with two friends who are unnecessary and annoying. I remember originally recording this review for YouTube, and commenting even then that I would be sitting on it until I was more caught up on the year end onslaught of titles. I’m also a Spirit Awards voter, so I had those films to watch too.

Good Grief just didn’t do it for me. I don’t think the narration, by Jonathan Bradley was bad. but, to be fair, I barely remember this. There wasn’t a single memorable moment or joke in this film. It felt beneath Levy, who I adore as a talent, even when he’s popping up on Sex Education as a bitter literature teacher, or in Happiest Season as Kristen Stewart’s token gay BFF. That’s why I watched this, but I should have realized Netflix was burying this at the top of the year.

I noticed in my notes for this, I put the production company as “PostHouse”, which I wonder if it was a typo and should be PostHaste, or something else. I do have Madeline Ball as the writer, and hopefully that’s correct and i wasn’t drunk, or Siri didn’t spellcheck. I honestly didn’t think it would take me until MArch to catch up on the onslaught of films, but it did. I have no context for this, but I graded this in my video with this grade, which I recorded immediately after watching it. So, I’ll stick with it, and add to it how a mere two months went by and I remember nothing about this.

Final Grade: D
