Daviess County Bourbon Review

I hope you all got the not-so-subtle clue about what we’re looking at today based on yesterday’s post, so here we go with the modern Daviess County Bourbon. A combination of a rye mash and wheat mash bourbon, and produced by Luxco/Lux Row, this is the latest brand to see a revival.

Daviess County Bourbon Review

Being from Luxco/Lux Row it’s a pretty safe bet that the whiskey in here came from Heaven Hill and is a blend of their standard mash (78% Corn, 10% Rye, 12% Malted Barley) and their wheated mash (68% Corn, 20% Wheat, 12% Malted Barley) which Luxco uses for their Rebel Yell releases. This is the based that the other two Daviess County releases are based on so it seemed like the best place to start.

A nice, tasty, bourbon that pulls through a nicely balanced array of rustic and sweet notes - there’s nothing to hate about this whiskey.

Mash Bill: At least 51% Corn + Rye + Wheat + Malted Barley (blend of rye and wheat bourbons)

Age: NAS (4+ years)

Tasting Notes

EYE
Amber

NOSE
Peanut brittle, oak, cocoa, vanilla, dried fruit, copper, spice and touches of biscuits and citrus.

PALATE
Peanut brittle, oak, caramel, syrup, spice, vanilla, cocoa, copper, apricot and bits of honey and graham cracker.

FINISH
Medium -> Oak and spice.

BALANCE, BODY & FEEL
Good sense of balance, medium body and a warm soft feel that fades out drying.


Daviess County Bourbon – Final Thoughts and Score

Aroma hits with a strong HH vibe and is a nicely balanced delivery of rustic oaky, leathery and darkly sweet notes with some bolder peanut butter and cocoa notes that rise as it opens – a touch of coppery spice adds dimension; Palate starts kind of… meh, but as it opens the spice creeps up over time as do the oak and sweet notes; Finish might be the best aspect with a solid spicy oaky fade.

The Daviess County Bourbon is good, it has a warm spicy presence that grows as it opens and is kept balanced with the sweetness and rustic/earthy tones that move with it. Water doesn’t do much but at 48% there isn’t any need to add it. Instead, just sit back and enjoy the solid oak note that threads through it. I’m definitely happy with this one.
