Cinema Rules for 2023
I am somebody who goes to the cinema once a week and over the past few months and years, I have noticed things that need to change. This is mostly to do with the audience, but a couple of these things are things the cinema itself could improve on. Some of these are going to be the obvious choices, but some are new ones that need changing. Let’s improve cinema etiquette.
So here are the Cinema Rules for 2023
1 – No Talking
One of the most frustrating experiences at the cinema is somebody giving running commentary about the movie you are watching. You are here to watch a movie, not talk about it. Enjoy what the talented people have put together, and you can chat about the movie after you leave the cinema all you want.
2 – Don’t Put Your Feet Up
When you are visiting the cinema, it is simple. Don’t put your feet on the chair in front of you. Even if it is empty, somebody else is going to sit there next and the last thing they want is having to deal with your dirty shoe mess. The last you should remember to never kick the chair if somebody is sitting in front of you. Also, keep your shoes on, nobody wants to have bare feet or socks over the furniture.
3 – Mobile Phones
Once the movie has started, leave your phone in your pocket or bag. If you need to check something quietly leave the auditorium and return when you have dealt with it. Under no circumstance should you be checking your phone once the movie has started. The large flashing lights of the phone screen have become a major distraction and need to be stopped.
4 – Be On Time
This is a joint one that needs fixing, as the audience members should be on time. I am tired of seeing people stumble in five or ten minutes into the movie. This is after the ads and trailers, so these people are already running twenty minutes plus late. On the other side of the discussion, cinemas should refuse entry and offer no refunds if you can’t turn up on time.

Just because you switched your phone off and put it in your pocket doesn’t mean you can leave your smartwatch on. Switch them off to, stop them flashing away through the film too. I do understand some are used for important information, but it does need to be put in a non-flashing position.
6 – Take Your Rubbish With You
When you visit the cinema, you will want a snack or drink throughout the movie. This is fine, but once the movie has finished, carry your rubbish to the bins. My local cinema has rubbish disposal at the exit of the cinema, so there is no excuse why you can’t take yours there. Don’t just leave it in and around your seat for someone else to clean up. The more mess left behind, the longer the next audience must wait to get into the cinema.
7 – Adverts and Trailers are Free Range
When it comes to the adverts and trailers we generally get the same ones each time. It has got to a stage where it is simple. If you need to do anything on your phone, use this time as the last bit before the movie. Have that little chat with their friends and locate your seat. Nobody is going to the cinema to watch adverts or trailers, so remember that is the last time to mess around on your phone.
8 – Offer More Screenings
One big thing the cinema chains could help improve the experience is by offering early screenings. If the numbers are expected to be low put films from around the world on. The best example of this recently was The Roundup a South Korean movie that only had one screening at 23:30. How are the audience going to enjoy a rarer movie that is on at such a crazy time? The more screenings, the more money that can be made.
9 – Be Prepared for Mid or End Credits Scenes
The new modern trend in movies is mid or end credits scenes. They started off by setting up the next movie before moving into an end gag. However, the audience is not always prepared for these scenes. It leads to people leaving and then stopping to finish watching the scene, blocking the view of people who have waited.
10 – No Filming
There seems to be a new trend of trying to film a reaction to a moment of a film for social media. While clickbait ideas on social media aren’t going to go anywhere. We are dealing with people needing to film end credits scenes for reaction. While we have mentioned not using phones, we can see people with real cameras and this needs to stop too.
