10 Outsider Award Choices
Every year we dive into award season and for the most part, the same selection of films is nominated in every single category. Even if it leads to many people discussing, championing, or campaigning for other movies. I always call for more horror movies to get the recognition they deserve.
Today, I am looking at a selection of movies that could easily get awards nominations. However, they will more than likely be overlooked. This isn’t just going to be acting or directing, but technical awards too.
Here are 10 Outsider Award Choices
1 – Madison Tevlin – Champions – Best Supporting Actress
Champions is a movie following a disgraced basketball coach forced to coach an intellectually disabled basketball team. The movie should already get praise for including a full cast of disabled actors in the roles. However, Madison Tevlin steals the movie with her sassy attitude. She is incredible and becomes the character you want to watch the most. Madison getting a nomination would make a massive statement for representing another group of actors who already struggle in the industry.
2 – Evil Dead Rise – Makeup and Special Effects
Evil Dead Rise is the 5th film in the franchise. One thing that has always stood out in the franchise is the excellent special effects and makeup. Evil Dead Rise takes things to the next level and it is easily one of the best achievements in that field. This is a special movie because of the makeup and effects which create a shocking series of events. When you see what is achieved to bring to life the horrors, all you can do is watch in pure respect for the work.
3 – Monica Dolan – Typist Artist Pirate King – Best Actress
Typist Artist Pirate King follows a woman who has lived with mental illness her whole life. One day she becomes convinced death is coming for her and decides to talk her carer into a road trip across England. Monica Dolan takes the leading role and we get to experience the struggles her character goes through every day of her life. This role is extremely challenging, and Monica makes it one filled with heart and soul. She manages to show the troubles in a flawless manner that makes us support her in her journey.
4 – Glenda Jackson – The Great Escaper – Best Supporting Actress
Glenda Jackson plays the wife of Bernard, Irene. She remains in the nursing home, while he goes on his adventure to France. While Bernard’s journey has a lot of emotional impact. Irene’s stories and ability to cover for him are impeccable. Glenda Jackson lights up the screen with her performance that feels like the most natural ‘Grandmother’ performance in decades. The movie is packed full of emotion and will bring you to tears along the way. however, Jackson brings the spark of humor just when you need it.
5 – Suzume – Best Animated Picture
Suzume follows a schoolgirl who accidentally finds herself drawn into a battle to stop disasters from hitting Japan. She meets a man who has been closing randomly placed doors that invisible evil monsters can enter in and cause mass destruction. This movie hits the emotional levels most animation achieves, the adventure is amazing and once again we get another fantastic movie from director Makoto Shinkai. It continues his theme of people fighting an impending disaster in a fantasy feeling. This is easily the best-animated movie of the year.
6 – Tracy Oliver & Dewayne Perkins – The Blackening – Best Original Screenplay
The Blackening is a horror comedy that looks to spin the traditional slasher movie idea on its head. It uses a group of black friends to reflect the under-representations they have received in the sub-genre of horror to point out the flaws in a comical way. All while bringing their own natural dialog to the table. It should go down as one of the most important movies in horror because of this factor. The Blackening is filled with laughs, scares and surprises. This should be seen as this generation’s ‘Scream’ where it understands the flaws in the slasher movies and builds on them.
7 – Dave Bautista – Knock at the Cabin – Best Supporting Actor
Knock at the Cabin follows a family that gets a visit from four strangers. The strangers claim that one of the family must kill themselves to save the world from destruction. Dave Bautista plays Leonard the leader of the strangers. While his imposing presence is a major factor, his softly spoken words bring calm to the situation. He shows he could easily overpower the family, but his calm delivery shows an impressive performance filled with secrets.
8 – Austin Keeling & Arielle Zakowski – Missing – Best Editing
Missing follows a teenager who thinks her mom has gone away for the weekend, only to discover she has gone missing. She starts searching down a string of potential avenues for answers learning more about her mother’s life. This is a tense thriller that follows in the footsteps of ‘Searching’ by having the movie filmed from a computer screen point of view. The chaotic nature of the searching comes to life through the editing that shows how quickly teenagers operate now. It has an added chaos because of this, something Searching kept a lot calmer. The editing ends up reflecting the panic going through June’s mind as the story unfolds.
9 – Alex Convery – Air – Best Original Screenplay
Air follows the story of how Nike got the deal to sign a young Michael Jordan to their brand. It follows them taking a chance outside of the business model to make a deal that changed sports branding as we know it. Perfectly directed by Ben Affleck, we get one of the most entertaining journeys through the sports industry. The movie is filled with wonderful performances and the writing gets complimented by their performances.
10 – Nida Manzoor – Polite Society – Best Original Screenplay
Nida Manzoor’s Polite Society follows a British-Indian teenager who is obsessed with becoming a stuntwoman trying to stop her older sister from marrying into an evil family. It is filled with humor and shows the cultural evolution within the modern British era, with traditional Indian beliefs. This might well be the first feature film, but it proves there is a big talent here that is ready to make a major impact.
