When we received an email from one-man band Zebrafi, Rafi Cohen mentioned that his songs were influenced by Pavement and St. Vincent and in ‘I am the Saviour’ he manages to effortlessly combine these very diverse acts into something fresh and exciting. Full of fun, the song has the Soundcloud tag #LaptopRock and is a slice of jaunty pop that also brings up memories of Adam Green’s earliest work.
‘I am the savior of all that is good and now I’m dead to you’ are lyrics that you can’t help but notice, but luckily this bitterness is turned into something positive. As the words become increasingly slurred and the riffs become more and more in your face, the song takes a turn into the more experimental side of indie-pop. Written as a protest against the way rock music seems to be looking back rather than forward, it’s an important issue that is dealt with in some style.
