YouTube Dominates Google Video in 2022

The analysis of 2.1 million Google video searches and 766 video plays found that approximately 94% of the video carousel results on Google came from YouTube, leaving very little room for other websites to compete. Users unfamiliar with online video advertising and the content will nevertheless recognize YouTube, which Google purchased in 2006. It’s worth noting that many Twitter and Facebook videos are password-protected and so inaccessible to Google due to technological constraints in how search spiders work. That’s why the top ten video carousel players (including some of the biggest businesses with big budgets for video content) only account for 3.7% of the videos in search results.

The data used in most of the analysis was a snapshot taken in early October. However, Google’s algorithms are dynamic; the company does hundreds of tests yearly to find the best possible version. It’s possible they picked a day with unexpected outcomes. To figure out a way out of this problem, researchers watched the video carousels on the first day of every month in 2022 to see if the same videos were showing up frequently.

YouTube’s dominance in 2021 was relatively stable, with a market share ranging from 92.0 to 95.3% across the year, with the upward trend beginning in January. You can infer from this that YouTube’s current state of dominance is not temporary.

Studying Google search results was complicated by the risk of sample bias, even when employing a vast data set. Even with the second, more historical data set, they attempted to do a random sample of the search results, which is impossible. While just 10,000 terms in total, this data set was constructed to reflect the diversity of Google Ads categories and sectors. For this data set, 2,390 video carousels were recorded on October 9th. The websites that dominated the first three spots in each video carousel slot were consistent with the 2M data set of terms, with YouTube’s dominance growing (from 94% to 96%). Because this is not just true for one data set or one day, they have concluded that the YouTube results they tested in the study are not a fluke.
