The carbon footprint of future bottles and cans of beer from Budweiser brewer Anheuser-Busch will be significantly lower.
In an announcement on Wednesday, the company announced that it plans to convert 30% of its tractor-trailer fleet to renewable natural gas, which includes around 180 trucks. Six years ago, the St. Louis-based brewer began swapping diesel-powered semis for ones that use compressed natural gas, but Anheuser-Busch found that RNG burns even cleaner. American Natural Gas and US Gain will supply the RNG drives.

RNG is a form of natural gas that, according to the manufacturer SoCalGas, "is obtained from sources such as dairies, sewage treatment plants and landfills". It's practically a greenhouse gas that would get into the atmosphere anyway, although it's hard to tell if burning to get your beer into the store is worse for climate change.
In addition to the RNG transition, the older CNG trucks will also receive updated drives from Agility Fuel Solutions to make them even more environmentally friendly. As part of the company's sustainability goals for 2025, Anheuser-Busch plans to reduce emissions by 25%. The updated and refurbished Semis reduces emissions by 70% compared to diesel-powered Semis, or the equivalent of 66,000 cars taken off US roads.
But that's not all. The Budweiser brewer began Testing a Hydrogen Electric Semis from Nikola last yearwho took the cold brew to a warehouse. There, a BYD electric vehicle brought the beer to its final destination, the Enterprise Center in St. Louis. BYD semis also joined the company's fleet in California to ship beer to four different destinations. While Nikola is getting his business off the ground, Anheuser-Busch has already placed an order for 800 of the hydrogen-electric tractor units.
