Many people find that as they turn 40, they start to feel the effects of getting on in years. Forty is relatively young; however, there are things that can start to creep in, for example, lower back pain and starting to put on a few more pounds. This is why looking after your health in your 40s is about ensuring you understand some of the following:

Maintaining Great Posture

Your posture is critical to how you conduct yourself. By the time 40 rolls around, you may have spent a lot of time sitting in a sedentary office job. You may not need to visit a chiropractor just yet, but it’s at this point where you could find yourself experiencing more back pain than ever because you’ve not been doing the right things. Chiropractors talk about the importance of posture, and we need to think about those things that our parents tried to drum into us for years: sitting up straight, keeping your shoulders back, and walking with your chest out. But if you are struggling with your posture, the best solution is to start training your mobility and flexibility, for example, by yoga.

Being Preventative of Health Problems

As we get older, we can find the bad habits we had in our twenties and thirties can slowly accumulate. As our 40s can be when we start to see higher rates of chronic disease, we’ve got to keep tabs on things like high cholesterol or diabetes. The best solution is to start going for regular check-ups. We can get a far better idea of what it takes to look after our health when we know what we are doing wrong.

Prioritizing Sleep

It is incredibly tough to prioritize your sleep when you are not getting enough. We can all feel overworked and when there aren’t enough hours in the day to do everything, we’ve got to recognize that sleep and quality rest is what will help us to bounce back stronger. Remember, it’s not about the amount of sleep you have, but the quality of it. Ensuring that you get good quality sleep will have a positive effect on your stress levels, your immune system, and it can help you to recover from the next point.

Exercising Properly

If you are not someone who exercises, now would be the perfect opportunity. Exercise is going to build muscle and maintain our bone density which can deteriorate with every decade. People talk about running, however, many people run with poor form. Ensuring that you weight train can help to maintain your bone density, but also ensure you get a good quality cardiovascular workout at the same time.

Looking After Your Gut

There’s a lot more research being conducted into gut health and ensuring that you look after your gut health means you’re looking after your immunity. With 80% of your immunity being in your gut, you should protect your microbiome by reducing artificial sweeteners, but increasing probiotics and prebiotics.

These are just a few things to look after your health in your 40s. Get some of these in place, and you should see the effects pretty quickly.
