You Could Be Cleaning Your House Wrong. Here’s How.

Everyone is looking for ways to make cleaning an easier and faster chore. Some homeowners follow hacks or shortcuts to ensure that no nook or cranny is covered in dust or grime. Sometimes, these hacks work, but in most cases, homeowners end up cleaning their homes wrong.

Some people clean their homes only to find out they’ve been cleaning the wrong way. All that back-breaking cleaning and you still end up with moldy basements, dusty windows and in need of tick control solution.

Keeping your home 100 percent clean can be a challenging chore, but it’s notimpossible.

To enjoy a clean and healthy home, find out how you’ve been tackling your cleaning chores wrong.

1. Using One Cleaning Cloth for Multiple Areas

Most homeowners make the mistake of using just one cloth for cleaning different surfaces. Think about using the same cloth for the bathroom as the kitchen. Just because they both have wet surfaces, it doesn’t mean using one cloth is OK.

You’re just transferring germs from the bathroom to the kitchen and vice versa.

Instead of using one cloth for different areas, designate different color cloths to different areas. For example, use green cloth for the bathroom, blue for the kitchen and pink for your dining room. Also, wash them regularly and properly. Don’t just run your cloth under the water.

For example, if you just cleaned the bathroom with a cloth, wash the cloth in your washing machine. Ideally, you should wash your cloths separately at 60 degrees minus the softener.

Dry Mopping Instead of Vacuuming

What is the best way to remove all the dirt and debris before you wash down the soiled floor? Most homeowners would say dust mopping (aka “dry mopping”). After all, it makes sense. But in reality, you’re just creating more cleaning problems.

Instead of dry mopping, use a vacuum. Vacuuming removes more dirt and debris compared to dust mopping. Vacuuming is also better than wet mopping. Mopping the floor with water could cause loose debris to stick on the surface, which makes it more difficult to remove.

Spending a Fortune on Expensive Cleaning Products

Some homeowners believe that the fancier and more expensive the product, the better it is. But in reality, the natural and “old-fashioned” cleaning products trump their fancier counterparts. Also, expensive cleaning products often contain ingredients that harm the environment.

Instead of buying expensive cleaners in fancy soap bottles, you can effectively clean your home with castile soap, white vinegar and baking soda. It will save you more money, as well as give Mother Nature some extra TLC.

Allowing Paper Clutter to Accumulate

Even with online shopping and banking, people still end up with mountains of paper in their homes. School papers, newspapers, magazines and projects: these papers often pile up and create clutter in your home. If you want a clean space, this should not be the case.

Instead of strewing the paper all over your home, designate a place near the entryway for all paper forms, periodicals and mail. Also, have a recycling bin or shredder nearby for the paper you’ll throw away. At least once a week, sort through your mountain of paper and toss those you don’t need.

As for the important paperwork, file them. Take digital photos or frame them for display (this one applies to your children’s artwork, not the tax receipts). As for your magazines, donate them to schools or retirement homes.

Not Cleaning the Toilet Properly

Germs will spread throughout your bathroom. Although it makes to think the toilet is the germiest, it’s not. Turns out the germiestbit in a bathroomis the toothbrush holder with the faucet handles in second place. Of course, this doesn’t mean you shouldn’t give your toilet a good scrubbing and sanitizing.

Clean well to stay healthy.

Spraying Cleaning Product Directly on the Surface

Most people directly spray the cleaning product on the table, window or another surface. Next, they wipe it off.

It seems like a straightforward process but it’s a wrong one. You’re better off spraying the cleaning product on your towel or cleaning cloth before you wipe it onto the surface. This ensures you’re not staining or damaging the surface. At the same time, you’re not going to use too much product.

Are you guilty of these cleaning mistakes? It’s never too late to correct them. Clean your home better today.
