Bryan Singer returns to direct the latest installment in the X-Men franchise. In 2023, Sentinels reign supreme and have eliminated many mutants as well as non-mutants who would one day birth the mutant gene. As depicted in the opening sequence, the Sentinels are almost indestructible in that they can adapt to each mutants’ powers. Wolverine’s (Hugh Jackman) consciousness is sent back in time to prevent the event that would spark the present’s apocalyptic and despair-filled world. The film brings together the cast from the original trilogy and their younger counterparts (as featured in X-Men: First Class (2011)).
Bolivar Trask (Peter Dinklage) is a scientist fascinated by mutants and the lead architect in the construction of the sentinel program. In the past, Wolverine must reunite Professor Xavier (James McAvoy) and Magneto (Michael Fassbender) in order to stop the sequence of events that would lead to the extinction of mutants. The only problem though is that their relationship is fractured and Magneto is a bit indisposed at the time. He is locked in a concrete prison under the Pentagon. Wolverine enlists the help of Peter Maximoff a.k.a. Quicksilver (Evan Peters) to help break the Omega mutant out of his detainment facility. Peters is masterful in his portrayal of the fast-footed mutant. The break-out scenes help set the tone for the rest of the film.
Unlike the other hero films released this year (The Amazing Spiderman 2 and Captain America 2) Days of Future Past is the best addition to the genre. While I liked X-Men: First Class slightly more, I think this film was brilliant. My only problem with the film was that I wanted more scenes of the original cast. The film really is a sequel to First Class and primarily is acted by that cast. Not that they aren’t fantastic in their roles. It was simply a bit of a bummer for me.

I did not watch this movie in 3D. The CGI was pretty great. The Sentinels of 2023 were better than I could have hoped. I’m glad to say that the film redeems the franchise from last year’s disappointment, The Wolverine. I strongly recommend you watch this in theaters. It’s worth the investment.
