The Burt Award for Caribbean Literature aiming to change the face of publishing in the Caribbean region

The Burt Award for Caribbean Literature is now open for entries to win the biggest publishing deal in the history of writing for young adults in our region. A first prize of $10,000 CAD, a second prize of $7,000 CAD and a third prize of $5,000 CAD will be awarded to the top three writers.

The guidelines have been revised to allow more publishers and authors to enter. There is a lot for publishers to win. The Burt Award, in collaboration with the NGC Bocas Lit Fest, guarantees book sales and distribution of up to 2,500 copies of each of the three winning titles. Publishers and authors will also benefit from marketing assistance and regional and international publicity offered by the Canadian charitable trust, CODE, founder of the Award.

Announced at the third annual NGC Bocas Lit Fest in Trinidad and Tobago in April, the Award now closes for entries on the 25 October 2013 and is now open to books published in the last four years by publishers registered and operating in the Caribbean, previously self-published books, and unpublished manuscripts.  The prizes will be awarded at the 2014 NGC Bocas Lit Fest, 23-27 April in Port of Spain.

This Award is a step towards building a sustainable publishing industry that will bring both economic and cultural benefit to the region. It also aims to ensure that schools, libraries and community centres across the Caribbean are stocked with fresh and engaging reading materials for youths.
