Western Province Rugby Football Union (WPRFU) will make arrangements to conduct an Open Club 7s Tournament within the region. The tournament will be worked off on May 14 at CR & FC ground at Longdon Place.
The last time an inter-club sevens tournament was held was in October last year organised by the tri-Forces called “Warrior Sevens”.
Speaking exclusively to the Daily News, Former Sri Lanka national fly half cum top class placekicker SSP Nizam Jamaldeen – the Vice President and Tournament Committee Chairman of WPRFU said “The reason to organize such a tournament is to give the players, especially the school leavers, an opportunity to display their talent. ‘WPRFU’ has the most number of member clubs and we will step up to keep the game going under the present situation, and the good news is we have also invited eight school teams from the Western Province to participate in this tournament”.“The school rugby has not been played for the past two years due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, hence this is a great opportunity for the school leavers to play in this tournament and if they showcase their talent, then all these talented players will go on to represent clubs and in return will have a chance to represent the motherland. This is my ultimate wish as a past national player who represented the country from 1986 to 1993”.
“We have sent invitations to all our member clubs and entries will be closed on May 8. Also, In addition, the ‘WPRFU’ had a committee meeting earlier this week and decided to organize an Under-21 and Under-24 and more 7’s tournaments this year as well,” concluded Jamaldeen.
