I'm not sure why but I have never introduced some super important family members here on the blog, my dogs: Paris and Lady! I have been very lucky to have the opportunity to adopt a dog, actually twice and since October is National Pet Adoption Month, I figured this would be the best time to introduce them to you and share their stories!

Meet Paris
Paris and I go way back, all the way to Spring 2001 when I received a phone call from one of my sisters asking me if I wanted a puppy. Of course I did! Only problem, I already had 2 rottweilers at home. I wasn't sure if a puppy would be such a great idea. Then she told me the words that would change my mind immediately: "She needs help!" Anytime I hear "needs help" I jump at the chance to help. I jumped in my car and drove to my sisters house. When I knocked on the door, I expected a super cute, adorable, bouncy puppy to jump at me. Instead, my sister held out her hands and in them was a little black rat looking thing. Immediately, I grabbed her from my sister, wrapped her in a washcloth (she was itty-bitty) and sat down to hear what happened. My sister told me that she was from a house where there were about 20 other dogs. The owner didn't even know that Paris' mom was pregnant, she just gave birth one day. Paris was the runt and was so weak. My sister happened to pass by that house and saw this little thing and her heart broke. She asked if she could have her and the owners said "Sure!", then she called me. I stared at this little thing in my hands and promised to take care of her. I left my sister's house with my new puppy, stopped by the pet store and purchased bottles and formula. I was determined that she would survive. I was in college at the time and I would either take her in my bag or come home and feed her every 3 hours or so. Slowly, she got stronger and started growing. I had no idea what kind of dog she was and honestly, I didn't care. I loved her. She would sleep in either my bed or my brother's. My rottweilers didn't even notice she was there. When she was a couple months old,  I introduced her to the rottweilers and there was no issue. They totally accepted my super cute puppy!

Old-school scanned pic! Wasn't she adorable?

13 years later, Paris is still with me. She is super smart and bossy. She loves Oreo cookies and barking at everything you can think of. She is a good, loyal dog. She loves Adrian and protects him fiercely. I look at her often and wonder how I was ever so lucky to get that phone call 13 years ago!
Meet Lady
Lady joined our family five years ago during Summer 2009. I received yet another phone call, but this time from my other sister. Her friend was moving out of her house into an apartment that didn't allow pets. She had a 6 month old Miniature Schnauzer that she wanted to send to a good home. My sister found out about the dog and called me. I rally didn't want another dog but I knew that if no one picked her up, she would be sent to the pound. I couldn't have that. So, of course, I got in my car and picked her up. She was the gentlest, sweetest puppy I had ever seen. She was in a cage at the ladies office so I took her out and carried her to the car. I wanted her to get to know me. I drove home with her on my lap. Paris loved her immediately. She is so kind and gentle but very needy for attention. I didn't need to name her, she was already a Lady!

Lady is a bit of a brat and loves to be carried like a baby. This picture shows her in full "Me, Me, ME mode!" with my brother. She will lay like that for hours if you let her!

October is Pet Adoption Month!
I can't imagine what would have happened to Paris or Lady had I ignored those phone calls. Maybe someone else would have taken them but most probably it would have been a bad ending. Not all dogs are as fortunate as them. Unfortunately, a lot of owners do dump their dogs at shelters. We've all seen the infomercials about the dog at the shelter with the sad face. Those infomercials kill me every time. I'm a firm believer in checking out your local dog shelter before buying a dog. Pet adoption is the way to go!

The other day, I found out that the dog food company, Pedigree is helping to feed shelter dogs by donating one bowl of dog food for every Pedigree dog product purchased at Sam's Club during the month of October. I don't usually shop for pet food at Sam's Club since I don't usually buy pet food in bulk but I decided that this month would be different. On Saturday morning, Adrian and I headed out to Sam's Club to make our purchases!

We purchased canned dog food and a box of the Dentastix treats. My dogs love these! This is alot for our two dogs so we will be keeping some and donating the rest to our local Humane Society!
