‘The less you reveal, the more people can wonder.’ - Emma Watson. We live in the age of unrivalled over-sharing. On an average today, I share what I wore, a snippet of my dream if I can remember it, a sneaky selfie of shameless proportions, my favorite new skincare picks… you name it. And it’s a funny thing, that, because in real life I’m most certainly a non-sharer. And whichever way I look at it, on my blog, I also don’t share that much.
The online world gives us a wonderful platform of many levels in which to share our personas. What we want the world to see. We borrow the screen for minutes or hours and allow a fragment of ourselves to filter through. It can be edited any number of times before reaching you, the reader. And even then, your judgment will differ greatly from what I perceive. It’s a funny old world that we live in.
Ages and ages and ages ago, when Emma Watson was doing the publicity rounds for the premiere of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - don’t. It’s still a sore subject for me - I read an article in which she said: ‘The less you reveal, the more people can wonder.’ That girl. Damn. Perfection.
And that’s the fundamental rule and aesthetic behind my blog and my subsequent online life. As much as I sit here most evenings and tap away about what I bought, my attempts at dating, how I feel about whichever odd situation I’ve found myself in… I don’t reveal all. As an avid blog reader as well as a blog-ger, I think this holds true to a lot of us. We want to pour our everything into these heavily curated fragments of ourselves and we want to share our highlights reels, but remember to leave a sense of wonder about you, always. That’s my favorite thing to do.
