Wonder Wednesday: Puerto Vallarta
The first thing I experienced in Puerto Vallarta was pure panic. I had just stepped off the boat, and instantly I was greeted with the largest parrot I have ever seen. Before I even had time to react the bird was placed on my shoulder - and boy did he find my hair fascinating.I was just hoping he wouldn't poop on me. He didn't, and I now consider him a dear friend.
Puerto Vallarta began it's true development the same time as Seattle, Washington. It has cobblestone streets and beautiful wrought iron balconies. It is a strange, but aesthetically perfect blend of San Francisco and the Amazon jungle: It has steep mountainous streets that would give any stick-shift driver a heart attack, and humidity so high that I saw flies walking.
I am in love.
While walking the Isle Cuale (an island in the old Downtown area, where they have flea markets), it felt as if we were in a jungle. Bright, beautiful birds calling and flying over head, while wild cats meandered lazily across our path. Freida Kahlo was everywhere. While we were only there for a day, I was still able to make a few friends: I met a gentleman at the bank who was an expat from San Diego, who was ever so helpful with moving tips. I met a local shop owner whose family has been in the candy business for generations. I came home with two of his caramel jars. I am not ashamed to say I'd travel all the way back for more.
I'd also like to hope that the parrot is my friend. After all, Puerto Vallarta is listed as one of the worlds Friendliest Cities.
