In brief :
• Agency representation continues to NFTs despite the market downturn
• Solana’s powerhouse project “Okay Bears” just signed a licencing deal with IMG, a subsidiary of Endeavors.
• Dappers Labs has added more partnerships and signed big deals with some of the world’s biggest sports leagues.
Even though the market is down, agency representation keeps making its way to NFTs. Monday, rumours spread that Dapper Labs and CryptoKitties co-founder Mack Flavelle will join the top talent agency WME (also known as Endeavor). Flavelle is well-known in the NFT community because she co-created the “O.G.” NFT project CryptoKitties in 2017. And now joins a growing number of creators in the web3 space who have signed contracts with WME.
It’s the latest example of an agency executive choosing to represent web3 in order to get a jump on the next wave of entertainment. Let’s look at what we know about Flavelle’s signing based on what we know so far.
The Agency’s Rush to Sign People
WME has worked with web3 representation in the past. In fact, Solana’s powerhouse project “Okay Bears” just signed a licencing deal with IMG, a subsidiary of Endeavors. While that was going on, some of WME’s main competitors were also getting new customers. When CAA signed a deal with Jenkins The Valet last year, they were one of the first big talent agencies to do so. CAA and WME are at the top of the talent agency food chain.UTA is another powerhouse agency that has grown a lot in recent years. It has landed customers such as Coinbase, Larva Labs, and the NFT collection Deadfellaz. In the meantime, WME has also signed contracts to represent NFT projects and web3 media projects.
How Does It Look?
However, we’ve never seen a Bored Ape on the big screen. What does NFT representation look like? We’re in a big “grey area” with NFT representation, and in general, we can see agency representation as a way to get “first dibs” on representation for big deals. This makes IP collaborations a big “land grab” for agencies, at least for the best properties. We could see NFT IP hit big verticals in the years to come, as there has been a lot of talk about it in almost every entertainment outlet.
Whereas Dappers Labs has grown its list of partnerships and signed big deals with some of the biggest sports leagues in the world, like the NBA, NFL, UFC, and, most recently, LaLiga, one of the best soccer leagues outside of the U.S. But don’t expect representation for anything other than Flavelle’s original content creations. It’s also not evident how much, if any, of Dapper’s property could fall under WME’s agency.
