At this time of year I like to go over my winter tips for walking here on The Daily Constitutional – I'm out in all weathers leading guided tours in London and I like to think I know a thing-or-two about the territory.
A good pair of shoes is, or course, essential at any time of year. I'm currently in the market for new walking boots – drop me a line or comment below if you've got a good recommendation – but my old faithful standby is the good Doctor…
Doctor Martens - a famous name, a GREAT design, a British-ISH classic (founded Seeshaupt, Germany 1947). Docs remain the perfect shoe for a man in early middle age still keen to create the illusion of rebelliousness…

I rotate three pairs. The black pair look great paired with a suit, while the green and the oxblood (or cherry) pairs are ideal with a kilt. Comfy? Practical? These are my “Three Guided Walks-a-Day” shoes – six hours of tour guiding and they still feel like Jermyn Street slippers.”
