Do you tend to wear jeans and trousers in winter because you don’t want to feel cold but then get really bored with your winter style?  I know that I can feel this way.  Yet as someone who feels the cold, how do you wear skirts and dresses in winter without feeling cold all the time?

Let’s start from the ground up.

Boots and Shoes

This is where the knee-high boot is the king and queen of shoes in winter as they keep both your feet and lower legs warm.  A flat riding boot works well with skirts and dresses as well as wearing them over a pair of skinny jeans (versatile!).  If you like a heel,  choose something in a height that you can comfortably wear all day so that pain from your feet doesn't show on your face.

Choose boots that you will blend to your hosiery (more on that in a minute) for ultimate leg elongation as you create an unbroken line from toe to the hem of your skirt or dress.

Alternatively, choose a boot in a colour that is reminiscent of your hair colour to create a top and tail (bookend) look to your outfit.  Hair colour shoes are so useful as you are always wearing your hair - it's part of every outfit.

A good pair of knee-high boots can easily last a decade in your wardrobe (may need a reheel or resole at some stage) so are a great investment in your winter wardrobe.

Ankle boots also work, particularly when blended with the colour of your hosiery/

Winter Hosiery

Avoid sheer tights and instead, choose heavy opaque tights.  There are some that are designed for cold winter months, made from fabrics with plush internal knitting that traps heat, to fine merino wool with an internal cotton interior for comfort to keep your lovely legs warm.

And you can add a pair of thermal socks over your tights if your tootsies get really cold too!

Under Layers

If you still feel the cold easily, it's wise to wear some sort of layer under your dress, I like to wear a shapewear tank as it covers my kidneys (that always feel cold) and provides another warming layer under my clothes.

If the dress has long sleeves, I might also add an additional long sleeve underlayer - something with thermal properties to really keep you warm. Layering multiple fine layers can be effective in holding in heat whilst not adding bulk to your outfit.  There are lots of tips here on how to layer with style.
