Wine Almost as Popular as Beer in the US

By Brian @WineInMyGlass

A recent Gallup poll shows wine and beer nearly tied as top choices for US drinkers. 36% of the people polled that consume alchohol indicated that they prefer beer, while 35% indicated wine as their top preference.

Men are more likely to prefer beer (48%), while more women prefer wine (51%). More older adults, particularly those 55 and older, prefer wine. Beer is more popular in the Midwest, while wine is on top in the East, South, and West.

People in higher income brackets are more likely to prefer wine. People with a college degree are also more likely to prefer wine, but  this may be related more to income, since people with degrees are more likely to have a higher income as well.

Does this mean wine is gaining popularity in the US? Not necessarily. There isn’t a clear trend at this point. Wine was more popular than beer in 2005, but that ended up being temporary. Does it really matter?  Probably not, but it is interesting.

Whether you prefer wine, beer, or liquor, drink what you like, and enjoy it responsibly.
