Willy Mason has shared ‘Youth On a Spit’ ahead of the release of his fourth – and first in nine years – album ‘Already Dead’ on 6 August via Cooking Vinyl. The new record has a theme of faith running through it while also exploring the concepts of honesty, deception, freedom colonialism, love and purpose. Willy says: ‘It’s about the necessary destruction of one’s mythology; mythology of species, sex, race, nation, self. It’s about the pain and tragedy that comes with such destruction, but also about the freedom, possibility and opportunity for reconciliation; reconciliation with the natural world and with each other.’
With the guitars very much plugged in from the get-go, ‘Youth On a Spit’ is one of Willy’s heaviest tracks to date while his distinct vocals deliver lines about paralysis and cultural blocks before the repeated, fuzzed-up mantra of ‘I feel no pain, I’ve already bled. You can’t kill me, I’m already dead’. Willy says the song is ‘about the struggle for freedom and identity that comes from growing up in an advertising-based culture’, and you can hear the depths of frustration with this state in Willy’s voice before the song veers into its Aaron Dessner-esque outro.
