Arcade Fire’s Will Butler has shared new single ‘Surrender’ ahead of the release of new solo album ‘Generations’ on 25 September via Merge Records (Waxahatchee, Caribou, Destroyer).

Opening with handclaps, a bluesy riff and call-and-response lyrics (‘Remember? I don’t know! You told me? Maybe so! You wanted to surrender’), it has a bit of back-to-basics approach that is charming. Will gives his falsetto an outing as he reveals his memories and lays his heart on the line about being so tired thinking about the subject. Around a minute and 20 seconds in, the jaunty piano joins in as Will starts to recall a lost love with passion and enthusiasm. Things jump up another level as he pleads ‘Surrender to something’ and the sound falls somewhere between Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever and classic rock.
