It's summer. Summer means sun. Sun means you need sunglasses or you get super annoying headaches and have to miss out on all the fun that sun can bring (sailing, fishing, golfing, reading, sitting outside, eating outside, driving...you get the point). Now, I should probably admit right now, before I go any further, that I have something of a sunglasses problem. Some people get all jazzed up about shoes, others collect bottle caps, stamps, Tamagachis (do they, though?), but I have a yen for shades. They don't have to be nice, either; I get as excited about this pair of weird green ones from a junk shop in the middle of Maine as I do about the latest Tom Ford set. Speaking of weird green pairs, here they are. Wait til you see the side view (after the jump).
Pretty good, right? The elastic is probably the best part. That or the fake leather blinders that go around the sides of the frame. But because not everyone can be lucky enough to find a pair of stunners like these, I've included some that you can own. Here they are, my picks for sturdy, timeless, beautiful shades that will keep your eyes happy and your image on track.
I love these Gant Marcia shades. They're for women, I think, but don't necessarily have to be. Awesome details across the bridge; I love the tortoise shell piece and the ring between the lenses.
I have a crush on these Westward Leaning Louisiana Purchase glasses. They're so cool, so hip, so non-nonchalant. They say, "I'm avoiding the sun, but because I want to, not because I have to." Or something like that.
Talk about cool cats. These Ray Ban Cats 5000 totally know what's up. A classic aviator shape in a great tortoise shell plastic? Yes, please.
These Persol Suprema have such beautiful details, from the silver eye piece connectors to the shape of the bridge. Tbey're almost a little fancier, a little more intense, than the others so far.
The Oliver Peoples O'Malley glasses scream "I'm sophisticated." Well, maybe they don't scream it, but rather gently suggest it.
When I was in college I really liked these Oakley Frogskins. A bit overdone, at this point, but still a great looking pair of glasses.
These Bob Sdrunk Tommy-66 are a new Italian brand. My mom just got a pair, and aside from the funny name (Bob's drunk, see?) they're really beautiful. Simple, classic, well designed.
And then, because it was as close to the green ones as I dared tread, the Bolle Damone in a super awesome pink. Because why not?
