According to Google there is no difference between the time the sun sets in Rockport, Maine and Boston, Massachusetts. But for some reason (wishful thinking, perhaps, or the blinding quality of love) the days feel longer in Maine. The moon was full the night of the solstice, too, and it lit up the harbor of my favorite place even after the sun went down (more after the jump).

Speaking of favorites, here are some of my favorite things: sweet potatoes, the song "I'm Comin' Out" by Diana Ross, when a work out ends, the smell of salt air blown inland, and the moment in the Disney version of Robin Hood when Robin leads Maid Marian under the waterfall. Also, summer. But I think my very favorite thing (besides people whom I love very much, of course) is drinking coffee on the porch in Rockport out of my mug on a Saturday morning. The mug is a real gem, pictured above, that my dad picked up for me at the Charlotte, North Carolina airport. I don't know the significance of bears to North Carolina, but I do know that the mug is the perfect size, has my name on it, and comes with a handy little thumb-tab on the handle.
My mother's garden is especially luscious this year thanks to some cooperative peonies, and I'm reading a good book, so last Saturday was the perfect first-day-of-summer-sit. I took a few pictures of the scene:

"But in spite of the note of pessimism that accompanied the observation Mr Dallon was not without hope: he believed as much in things eventually getting better as he did in the probability that they would first become worse."

The book, Two Lives by William Trevor, is two books in one book. I've only read the first one so far (it's called Reading Turgenyev), but I loved it and highly recommend it to those of you who like beautiful and very sad fiction. I will report back as the second story upon completion.
Also, when I first started this blog back in June of 2009, I would write what I was listening to as I wrote each post and include my favorite lyrics from the song. So in the spirit of this site's fourth anniversary...
Listening to:
"Song to Woody" by Bob Dylan
Favorite lyrics:
"Hey, hey, Woody Guthrie, I wrote you a song
'Bout a funny old world that's comin' along
Seems sick and it's hungry, it's tired and it's torn
It looks like it's dyin' and it's hardly been born."
