I know I've come across a store that hits my aesthetic sweet spot when I start getting a little bit giddy as I browse through their offerings. A bubbly feeling percolates under my ribcage, like it does when I'm listening to a really great song (I call those songs "ribcage songs," and yes, "All I Want for Christmas" is definitely one of them--says the Jewish girl). I know something is worth blogging about when I get that feeling and then nod to myself in silent affirmation, as though I'm telling myself, "yes, these things are good things." (awesome, awesome stuff after the jump).
I felt this in a big way when I found Izola. I've blogged about some of their soaps before in a group post, but I didn't realize they made other goods that are just as lovely. Neil Rasmus and Richard Brandt founded Izola in 2007, originally making shower curtains for big box stores like Bed, Bath, & Beyond. When they teamed up with the think tank Aesthetic Movement in 2009, however, they began branching out, designing everything from coasters to toothbrushes to jewelry. They currently use five themes in their designs: Scout, Maritime, Apothecary, Sport, Powder Room, and Great Plains. Each one is distinct, but the clean and witty design of their products carries through each category.
Never tacky, always maintaining a sense of humor, Izola definitely makes the cut as a "ribcage company." Because just like a good song, these designs hit a sweet spot. Here are some of my favorite products (above are the Maritime Coasters):
