By Dr.jenifer Sayyed @SayyedJenifer

Vitamin D is also known as “sunshine vitamin” which is one of the most important nutrients for our body. Due to lockdown, we are not able to get an ample amount of sunshine which we used to get and that can lead to Vitamin D deficiency.

We all know the role of Vitamin D for healthy bones and teeth as it gives us vital calcium. Let’s read to know more benefits.

Vitamin D Benefits

1. Healthy Bones: Vitamin D is essential for proper absorption of calcium, which is a key nutrient in maintaining bone health.

2. Better muscle functions: Vitamin D promotes better muscle functions that protect important organs of the body.

3. Decreased risk of diseases: Vitamin D helps in diabetes management by regulating insulin levels. It supports lung function and cardiovascular health. It also reduces inflammation in the whole body.

4. Improves your mood and reduces depression: According to the study, it has been found out that the intake of Vitamin D has improved mental peace.

So, now make sure to get sufficient Vitamin D while at home during this lockdown.

1) Give me some sunshine

Vitamin D is produced when your skin is exposed to sunshine or UV radiation. Roughly 15-20 mins three days per week of sun exposure is sufficient for the body.

Read a book or cut vegetables or just relax in your balcony, veranda or terrace to soak some sunlight. Morning sunshine is the ideal time for exposure. I have started doing the same.

*Take your kids too, and avoid afternoon time.

2) Give me some Vitamin D rich foods

Why Vitamin D intake is important during Lockdown?

Vitamin D rich foods you can easily get when you go for grocery shopping or even at your nearest ration shop.

  • Dairy products
  • Eggs
  • Mushrooms are a good source of Vitamin D.

Also, check for food items fortified (extra nutrients added) with Vitamin D:

  • Milk
  • Bread
  • Cereals
  • Oats
  • Orange juice

3) Vitamin D supplements

If you are having Vitamin D deficiency- bone pain, muscle weakness, excessive sweating, and feeling exhausted, then consult your doctor on the phone and they will guide you with proper management and the right dosage.

Children can also have muscle weakness and pain, so connect with your health practitioner accordingly.

*Kindly note: Excess of anything is bad and too much of Vitamin D can result in health problems. Therefore, always consult with your doctor before taking Vitamin D supplements.
