Why Put the Keys Under Your Chin to Unlock the Car?

Posted on the 09 January 2023 by L'Express

Among all the tips circulating on the web, this one will not fail to surprise more than one, including you, certainly! To unlock your vehicle from a longer distance, you can place the key under your chin, as if your body was acting telepathically… This would be revolutionary. Imagine: control all your devices by mind? So, let’s find out some facts and investigate.

The key under the chin: humbug, magic or reality?

The vast majority of vehicles are now equipped with this remote locking system, commonly called plip or Keyless Go in English. The system was invented by a French engineer Paul Lipschutz (hence the Plip), in 1978, and is now used all over the world. Some can no longer do without it and smile when they are handed a traditional key to start and open the doors of the vehicle. Moreover, once your car unlocked, the success of the operation always materializes in the same way, namely beeps, blasts of the horn and a call from the hazard warning lights. Before proceeding, it is necessary to understand how this device works.

Open and close my car remotely

This operation is carried out thanks to electromagnetic waves which are emitted by the device and received by a sensor which carries out the operation. Your Plip is therefore a kind of remote control. The range distance of the waves is not very important and does not allow the vehicle to be closed more than 20 meters, hence the need to be close to the vehicle. This device has another function that allows the vehicle’s windows to be opened or closed remotely. Convenient in summer or when it rains. On the other hand, the waves can be scrambled or worse picked up by another box. A method adopted by some burglars to seize the vehicle. This flaw has prompted automakers to consider things differently. The latter are beginning to set up applications allowing this operation to be carried out from their laptop, which aims to calm the ardor of thieves.

Who would have thought that? The key under the chin?

When hot, the human body also emits waves (Wein’s law). Thereby, by placing the plip under the chin, this will allow the waves to be propagated, relayed, or even amplified. These are thus a few meters that will be gained, allowing the car to be unlocked. There is therefore no question of magic to explain this phenomenon.

You got it: you can therefore increase the unlocking distance of a vehicle by using your own body. Prudence dictates whether this is good or bad. We can assume that the waves used in the plip system are not harmful and that they can be amplified without danger. It’s up to you to try the experience or not!
