Why I Love...Anne of Green Gables (Anne Shirley)

Anne of Green Gables Boxed Set, Vol. 1 (Anne of Green Gables, Anne of Avonlea, Anne of the Island)I've read a lot of books and I've been reading FOREVER.  I can go on and on about my love for steamy romances or troubled WWII novels.  I've read some fantastic books as an adult, but there are some books (and characters) from my childhood that will stay with me for life.  There are some characters (and books) that make me teary eyed with nostalgia.  When I was a kid reading, I became deeply attached to characters.  Oh it was so hard to let go.  Perhaps one of my bigger attachments...Anne Shirley from Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery.
Anne of Green Gables: The CollectionI remember this series so vividly.  I loved following Anne from her arrival in Avonlea to her eventual courtship and marriage.  Oh and imagine the horror of finding out that your adoptive family was expecting a dreadful boy to help with chores instead of a delightful and slightly precocious red-headed girl!  My heart broke right then and there and I was hooked.  Oh and I loved how smart Anne was!  I love smart characters (more than popular ones I guess).
I used to have a notebook where I wrote down all the different names I ran across in this series because I was convinced I would never see them anywhere else.  I was also convinced that I would need the list for when it was time to name my own children (true story).
Anne of Avonlea Complete Text (Charming Classics)While I was friends with Anne, I also loved Diana, Jane, and Ruby.  I imagined that Gilbert was the most wonderful guy ever, well after he grew up of course.  And I turned my nose up at those dreadful Pye sisters.  Most of all I loved hearing how a girl could go to college in the 1880s.  Perhaps Anne was special because of her orphan status, her red hair, and her continuous mishaps but it is her loyalty to family and friends I remember above all.  Perhaps that is why, I remain loyal to her and all her awesomeness.  Me and Anne...we go way back :)
Which childhood friends do you love and remember?  Feel free to create your own post and link up.  Don't want to create an entire post?  Tell me your favorites in the comments.  Thanks for stopping by for another week of Why I Love Wednesdays!!
